Senior Anaesthetic and Recovery Practitioner

We are looking for a full-time Senior Anaesthetics and Recovery Practitioner to manage the day-to-day running of our Theatre, ensuring that the service user experiences a very high standard of care.

Main duties of the job

As part of the theatre senior team, you will work to meet departmental objectives by contributing, developing, and supporting the work of the theatre service. This will include staff training and development, process improvement, and project management.

You will be competent to practice as an Anaesthetic Assistant and Recovery Practitioner for a variety of specialties and complexities of cases and will hold qualifications, or work towards obtaining qualifications, that allow you to act in the role of team leader.

Job responsibilities

Communication

Contribute to the development and maintenance of a supportive working environment that upholds morale, well-being, and efficiency of all staff.

Develop effective communication skills and strategies within the department.

Liaise with Theatre Management regarding staffing issues and the provision of high-quality care to service users.

Utilize interpersonal and listening skills to communicate effectively with patients, their carers, and the multidisciplinary team.

Planning and Organising

Assist in planning and staffing allocation, skill mix management, and managing sickness as necessary.

Work within budgetary restraints, coordinate stock/equipment, and lead on trials in line with hospital policy, reviewing and updating stock and equipment requirements.

Initiate procurement and/or maintenance of assets.

Keep up to date and disseminate local and national peri-operative initiatives.

Contribute to the development and updating of Policies and Procedures.

Implement guidelines (e.g., NICE, AfPP) where appropriate, in line with Quality Governance.

Analytical

Demonstrate advocacy and decision-making skills autonomously regarding patient care.

Maintain an adaptable theatre service, providing flexibility to meet patient and team needs.

Identify and respond appropriately to changing demands, situations, and pressures, leading the team to be flexible and accommodating.

Task Specific Skills

Ensure patient safety and dignity during anesthesia.

Check all anaesthetic equipment and cater to Consultant preferences.

Work with Anaesthetists to ensure patient safety.

Maintain a properly equipped and clean Anaesthetic room.

Administer prescribed drugs correctly.

Be aware of emergency procedures, e.g., cardiac arrest, fire evacuation.

Provide postoperative care in the recovery room.

Assist in theatre preparation and clearing, labelling, and dispatch of specimens.

Maintain accurate patient documentation.

Follow proper procedures when handing over patient care.

Undertake on-call sessions as required.

Work within HMT and local policies and procedures.

Person Specification

Experience

  • Educated to Diploma/Degree level or equivalent
  • Registered NMC or HPC qualification
  • Evidence of recent professional development
  • Leadership experience and registration as Nurse/Healthcare professional
  • NHS or independent sector experience
  • Experience working with clinicians of varying seniority
  • Ability to act as Anaesthetic Assistant/Recovery Practitioner across specialties
  • Ability to teach and assess others technically
  • Ability to develop soft skills in staff
  • Experience conducting audits and implementing improvements
  • Contribute to competency development programs
  • Ability to analyze and prioritize tasks
