The Senior Advisor (Pedagogy and Practice) will support the Director of Learning Enhancement and Academic Practice in delivering high-quality staff academic development, support, and training. BNU is committed to being a ‘learning organisation’ with new expectations for all academic staff to engage in effective academic development. The role supports the implementation of the institutional Access and Participation Plan, focusing on reducing inequity in student outcomes.

The Senior Advisor will play a key role in designing and delivering the Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP), our core in-house training for academic staff. The role also involves delivering standalone staff development activities, supporting curriculum design, assessment practices, and leading the AdvanceHE Fellowship accreditation programme to support staff in achieving fellowship levels.

On a daily basis, they will work with academic staff to identify development needs, design and deliver academic development activities, assess academic work and fellowship applications, and provide pedagogical expertise. Collaboration with other Senior Advisors, the LEAP directorate team, and university departments (e.g., Academic Quality, Academic Colleges) is essential to ensure high-quality staff development.

Job Purpose:

  • Lead the institutional approach to pedagogy and practice, adopting a consultancy approach to working with all academic areas
  • Contribute significantly to staff academic development, including the PostGraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP) and the AdvanceHE Fellowship scheme
  • Support academic colleagues in embedding digital tools and resources in teaching, learning, and student support
  • Provide expert advice, interventions, and guidance on good practice and innovations in learning, teaching, and assessment
  • Identify areas for enhancement using data and sector insights
  • Design and deliver teaching improvement activities to enhance student outcomes
  • Monitor and evaluate the impact of development activities, promoting good practice aligned with university strategies
  • Lead research and projects to foster educational improvement and innovation, including the Access and Participation Plan
  • Practice an inclusive approach and support building an inclusive university community

Main Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to research-informed pedagogy, curriculum, and programme planning
  • Design and deliver professional development courses, workshops, and short courses for academic staff
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to deliver a cohesive service that improves student learning and outcomes
  • Use sector insights and evidence-based approaches to advise staff on good practice
  • Support the development of an inclusive teaching and learning culture
  • Use metrics and KPIs to identify and address teaching and learning challenges
  • Adopt a consultancy approach to support academic staff with teaching interventions
  • Contribute to pedagogical research through conference and peer-reviewed outputs
  • Undertake collaborative research with external partners
  • Comply with relevant legislation and policies
  • Perform other duties as required
