We are seeking aSenior Advanced Photonic Fabrication Research Scientistto work at NIST Gaithersburg, MD as a full time Quantinuum employee.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Participate in a team of physicists and optical engineers supporting the development of commercial and research photonic components for quantum computing
  • Develop and refine novel fabrication methods for the production of unique and deployable photonic devices
  • Fabricate photonic components for manipulation of light across the spectrum
  • Gather technical requirements, turn them into action plans, and ensure the components and systems meet the requirements
  • Participate in metrology and optical testing to optimize fabrication processes and device designs.
You Must Have:
  • PhD Degree minimum
  • Minimum4+ years’ experience (advanced degree inclusive) in nano/micro-fabrication
  • Due to Contractual requirements, must be a U.S. Person. defined as, U.S. citizen permanent resident or green card holder, workers granted asylum or refugee status
  • Due to national security requirements imposed by the U.S. Government, candidates for this position must not be a People's Republic of China national or Russian national unless the candidate is also a U.S. citizen.
We Value:
  • Ph.D. in Optics, Physics, Applied Physics, or a related field
  • 3+ years of experience after PhD (postdoc, industry research or manufacturing, etc.)
  • Experience with fabrication of photonic devices, with an emphasis onmetasurfaces or other highaspect ratio structures.
  • Experience with fabrication process development including film deposition, etching (wet and dry), lithographic techniques (especially EBL), and metrology (e.g. FIB/SEM, AFM, profilometry, ellipsometry, microscopy, etc.)
  • Experience with photonic simulation tools (Lumerical, RSoft, or similar tools for guided mode solvers, FDTD, FEM, or RCWA)
  • Experience with optical testing of photonic devices
  • Experience with scientific coding and data analysis and visualization, and familiarity with software tools like MATLAB, Python, Mathematica, Origin, Igor, etc.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, ability to concisely and accurately convey complex information to team members with diverse technical experience, published results within your field of research.
  • Experience in micro-optical systems directing and manipulating visible coherent light
  • Experience working remotely with a development team
  • Broad understanding of optical principles and practices and intimate knowledge and experience applying this knowledge to projects
  • Experience with engineering change documentation; ability to work from assembly drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams, sketches and other written, visual and oral instructions
