The Faculty of Engineering and Physical Science is seeking a Senior Administrator to join the Faculty Operating Service. Based in the School of Engineering, you will make an important contribution supporting the Head of Department for the Mechanical Engineering department and the academic community, as well as leading a team. Successful applicants will be experienced, motivated, enthusiastic, and proactive team leaders who are culturally sensitive and are able to work effectively in a flexible and collaborative environment.

Mechanical Engineering is one of four departments within the School of Engineering, which itself is one of the largest and most diverse engineering schools in Europe. The Mechanical Engineering departmentis our second largest department, supporting c83 academics and c65 PhD students. Mechanical Engineering’s activities cover support for 4 research groups plus the newly created Southampton Advanced Manufacturing and Design Hub which are all based at Highfield.

As a senior member of our busy administrative team you will provide high level support to the Head of Department and also lead a team to deliver professional and efficient services including operational assistance and administrative support to the academic community, event organisation, financial administration, organising and minuting meetings, and ordering resources. To be successful in this role you will:

  • Have the ability to build effective and credible working relationships and liaise confidently with senior colleagues
  • Be adaptable, flexible, proactive and a collaborative team leader, with strong interpersonal skills and a positive and enthusiastic approach
  • Have excellent line management and organisational skills and the ability to effectively manage workload across a team to meet business requirements
  • Manage complex processes, analyse and interpret business information and support local governance committees
  • Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills and well as up-to-date MS Office skills
