Could you be a SEND Tutor at Sense College?

We’re looking for a passionate and creative SEND teacher to join our professional team as a Special Education Needs and Disability Tutor at our College Centre based in Bedford. We welcome applications from experienced SEND teachers as well as those seeking development opportunities.

The successful applicants will work with a small group of students aged 16-25 with various learning, sensory, and physical disabilities. You will develop individual learning plans based on thorough assessments and outcomes outlined in the students' Education, Health and Care Plans. Your responsibilities include planning and delivering lessons, assessing and reporting on student progress. The SEND Tutor will lead a classroom team, employing specialist teaching approaches and resources, and will supervise and coach learning support staff to ensure high-quality teaching and learning. You will be part of a broader team of SEND Tutors, sharing best practices and supporting each other professionally. Key responsibilities:

1. Plan and deliver effective learning programs for a small group of SEND students aged 16-19.
2. Lead on an area of the curriculum, ensuring it is current, relevant, and meets the needs of all students.
3. Conduct specialist assessments to identify key learning objectives for students.
4. Collaborate with the Vice Principal of Curriculum and Quality to mentor new and developing staff members.
5. Perform observations and learning walks to support quality improvement and staff development.
6. Deliver training on your lead area and other topics to enhance staff skills and knowledge.
7. Represent the college at EHCP reviews, learning reviews with parents, taster days, open days, and transition events.

Your required skills and experiences:

1. Higher-level teaching qualification, e.g., Certificate in Education or PGCE Level 5.
2. Diploma in English and Maths at Level 2.
3. Understanding of the needs of young people with various special education needs.
4. Ability to use assessment to plan and review learning.
5. Ability to model professional and positive behavior for staff and students.
6. Effective communication skills, both interpersonal and written.
7. Experience supporting students with positive behavioral strategies.
8. Experience working in a teaching environment and as part of an education team.
