Job summary

Northway Primary School in London is seeking a Teaching Assistant Apprentice to gain hands-on experience while earning a Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship standard qualification. The role runs 33.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday, for 18 months, with a salary of £8.00 per hour and a raise after one year for those aged 19+.

The apprenticeship includes online training with a dedicated tutor and is based at The Fairway, London, NW7 3HS.

Qualifications

• GCSEs in English and Maths at grades 4–9 (A*–C) desirable.
• Patience, sensitivity and a calm, caring nature are essential.
• Ability to follow instructions and use initiative.
• Confident using basic IT systems or handheld devices.

Responsibilities

• Assist teachers with lesson preparation, resource set‑up, and classroom activities.

• Assist with marking, recording progress, and tracking student performance.

Northway School is a special school in the London Borough of Barnet. We are going through an exciting period of change, expansion and development as we have become an all‑through school across two sites. We currently cater for over 160 students with a range of learning difficulties and disabilities, including those on the Autism Spectrum.

Apprenticeship Overview:

• Salary:£8.00 an hour,Automatic pay increase after one year on programme for 19+ year olds
• Working Week: Monday - Friday 8.35am - 3.50pm(30 minute lunch break)
• Hours:33.5 hours per week

As a Teaching Assistant Apprentice, you will:

• Assist teachers with lesson preparation, resource set‑up, and classroom activities to create a productive learning environment
• Provide tailored guidance to pupils, helping them understand subjects, build confidence, and overcome challenges
• Support behaviour management strategies, ensuring a safe, respectful, and engaging space for learning
• Help organise and prepare teaching materials, from textbooks to visual aids and digital resources
• Assist with marking, recording progress, and tracking student performance
• Work closely with staff to adapt activities and ensure all pupils, including those with additional needs, feel included and supported
• Encourage the use of technology in lessons, guiding students with educational tools and software
• Support teachers in maintaining positive relationships with parents, sharing progress and addressing concerns
• Take part in training and workshops to develop your teaching skills and knowledge
• Always uphold the highest standards of safeguarding and student welfare

Qualifications:

• GCSEs in English and Maths at grades 4–9 (A*–C) desirable

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

The successful candidate will obtain a Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship standard qualification.
Each apprentice will have their own dedicated tutor who will conduct monthly remote tutorials and reviews, providing continuous support throughout the apprenticeship program. Depending on the apprentice’s needs, the frequency of these sessions may vary.
