Job summary

Vision for Education is seeking a supportive and adaptable SEND Teaching Assistant to work in a Birmingham school. You will support students aged 16-25 with complex learning, physical, sensory and communication needs to access education and develop independence.

Responsibilities include personal care, mobility support, assisting with meals, following EHCPs and care plans, recording progress, and working closely with teachers, therapists and families to help every learner thrive.

Qualifications

• Qualifications in Youth Work, Health and Social Care or Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools are desirable but not essential.
• Strong communication skills with the ability to quickly build rapport with students.
• Ability to obtain suitable references and a DBS check.

Job description

Vision for Educationare seekinga supportive and adaptable SEND Teaching Assistant to work in a school in Birmingham.

The Role:

• Support students aged 16-25 with complex learning, physical, sensory and communication needs to access education and develop independence.
• Provide personal care support, including toileting, changing, continence care, dressing and personal hygiene, while maintaining students' dignity, privacy and choice.
• Assist students with eating and drinking, including following individual dietary requirements and supporting students who require assistance with meals and hydration.
• Support students with mobility and transfers, using appropriate moving and handling techniques and specialist equipment where required.
• Follow individual Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), care plans, risk assessments and behaviour/support plans.
• Assist students with medical and health-related needs in accordance with college policies and individual care plans.
• Support students who use wheelchairs, walking aids, communication devices and other specialist equipment.
• Encourage students to develop independence, confidence and life skills, providing the appropriate level of support rather than doing tasks unnecessarily for them.
• Provide emotional and behavioural support, helping students to regulate emotions, communicate their needs and manage challenging situations safely.
• Maintain a calm, patient and supportive approach when working with students with complex or distressed behaviour.
• Work closely with teachers, therapists, nurses, families and other professionals to provide consistent support.
• Observe and record students' progress, wellbeing, personal care and support needs, maintaining accurate and confidential records.

About you:

To be considered for the SEND Teaching Assistant role, you will:

Hold suitable qualifications such as Youth Work, Health and Social Care or Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools are desired but not essential.

Able to obtain suitable references and a DBS check.
