Job description

Lead English Teacher - SEMH, Trauma

Location: Westbury, Wiltshire

Start date: ASAP

Type: Full-time, Temp-to-perm contract

Salary: GBP125.23 - GBP201.53 per day during trial (GBP24,420 - GBP39,300 perm equivalent)

Our client is an independent provider supporting learners across all key stages 1-4 and also Post-16, although the majority of their learners are in KS3/4. The school supports x32 learners, and this is at least on a 1-2-1 basis with additional learner support often provided. Invariably, the learners have been out of mainstream education for a significant amount of time and often permanently excluded, so supporting their educational development and emotional health/self-esteem are important for the person considering this role.

The right person will ideally be a UK qualified teacher, with QTS/QTLS/PGCE/Cert Ed specializing in English. However, if you have a teaching qualification without QTS and have proven experience of delivering UK curriculum-based lessons, we'd still love to hear from you.

All learners at this setting have an EHCP to define their additional needs or an EHCP in progress. Often learners can display challenging behavior; however, staff use a trauma-informed approach and are appropriately trained in de-escalation strategies. The ideal candidate will already have this type of experience and training, although training would be provided to align with their approach. Overall, creativity, perseverance, and an empathetic approach when working with learners is key to engaging them in education and ensuring their progression.

This role will involve:

  1. Delivering an adapted Primary English curriculum
  2. Delivering high-quality lessons to all learners
  3. Ensuring that all activities are accessible to individual learners with a wide range of needs
  4. Understanding and supporting the challenges of the learners
  5. Motivating & inspiring the learners to engage & achieve
  6. Providing practical resources & strategies for colleagues to use & integrate into other lessons
  7. Helping to champion the work of all learners

Applicants best suited to this role will have previous experience of working with learners that have SEND (mainly SEMH & trauma) and have experienced other barriers or challenges to their education.

ECTs can be considered for this role; however, currently, ECT induction cannot be supported.

If you love working with people who are dedicated to supporting young learners in a positive setting, this is the role for you.

Applications are welcomed from candidates that meet the vast majority of the above job & person criteria. We also recognize that many people interested in such a role may not have specific experience as detailed, so we would still welcome applications from those with substantial experience of supporting young people with SEND or other challenges in education.

This role is not suitable for:

  1. Applicants requiring sponsorship for the right to work in the UK
  2. Those without UK teaching experience
  3. Those without UK SEND teaching experience

All applications will be managed by Elementa. Successful applications will undergo a full prescreen to be formally considered for the role. Any appointment will be subject to a successful interview process, satisfactory references, and a DBS Enhanced Disclosure application (which may be chargeable at GBP53.20), unless you have a DBS Enhanced disclosure subscribed to the Update Service. The transfer to a permanent contract will be dependent on successful completion of the 60-day trial period.

Please apply with your full up-to-date CV. All applicants will be promptly responded to.
