Functional Skills Tutor – SEND
Location: Eckington and across sites in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, and South Yorkshire
Hours: Full-time, 37.5 hours per week (Monday to Friday, 8:30am – 4:30pm), 52 weeks per year
Salary: £32,432 – £39,998 (dependent on experience)
Contract: Permanent

We are recruiting on behalf of a specialist education provider for a Functional Skills Tutor to deliver high-quality sessions in English, maths, and ICT to young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). This is a rewarding opportunity to make a lasting impact on learners’ personal and vocational development.

About the Role

The successful candidate will deliver Functional Skills lessons across a range of abilities, including learners with complex needs. Sessions are delivered face-to-face, in both group and one-to-one settings, and occasionally via remote learning.

You'll be based at a main site near Eckington with regular travel to satellite sites and community locations. A willingness to travel between sites and transport learners where necessary is essential (mileage and expenses reimbursed).

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver Functional Skills (English, maths, and ICT) from pre-entry up to Level 2
  • Plan and deliver engaging, inclusive lessons tailored to individual learner needs
  • Carry out initial assessments and use diagnostics to inform personalised support
  • Act as pastoral tutor and manage the full learner journey, including progress tracking and reviews
  • Maintain accurate records and ensure compliance with assessment and reporting standards
  • Collaborate with support staff, families, and external services to meet learner needs
  • Support learners to develop independence, confidence, and employability skills
  • Promote the embedding of English, maths, and ICT across all areas of the curriculum
  • Attend moderation meetings and CPD sessions, contributing to curriculum quality and development
  • Ensure safeguarding and learner well-being are upheld at all times

Person Specification

  • A recognised teaching qualification (e.g. PGCE, QTS, QTLS, Cert Ed)
  • Experience working with learners with SEND (including ASD, SLD, PMLD)
  • Strong communication and organisational skills
  • Confident in using a range of teaching methods to support differentiated learning
  • Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle
  • Knowledge of RARPA and experience of non-accredited learning
  • Experience delivering City & Guilds or equivalent qualifications
  • Understanding of the Ofsted Education Inspection Framework
