Job description

SEN Teaching Assistants (multiple positions)

Blackfriars Academy is looking for Teaching Assistants to join our school.

The ideal candidates will have experience working with SEN pupils. You will work under the direct instruction of teaching staff, providing specific support to the teacher in caring for pupils and managing the classroom. Work may be undertaken in the classroom or outside the main teaching area and will include personal care of students, including administering medication and manual handling. This rewarding role will contribute significantly to the children in our school, offering them the life chances they deserve. Our students are hardworking, polite, and resilient, making this role both joyful and challenging.

Blackfriars Academy is a very special place to be educated. We have a learning community of approximately 120 students aged 11-19 and over 90 staff, all working towards supporting students with profound, complex, moderate, or severe learning needs to reach their potential. We provide an outstanding educational experience in a supportive and caring atmosphere where students thrive in an inclusive environment.

Shaw Education Trust is a diverse and growing group of schools, including primary, secondary, and special schools, all working together to improve young people's lives. Sponsored by Shaw Trust, a charity focused on transforming lives, we are committed to ensuring every child has the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their starting point.

Our special settings cater to children and young people with a wide range of special educational needs, from profound medical needs and life-limiting conditions to social, emotional, and mental health needs requiring support and understanding.

Whether you are a teacher, a teaching assistant, a healthcare professional, or work in facilities, admin, or operations, our special schools offer a 'family' environment that prioritizes children, young people, and their families.

All pupils in our special schools have individualized education plans and are educated in small classes with enhanced support to meet their needs. Supporting a child or young person with SEN to reach their goals is highly rewarding. You will truly make a difference in their lives and those of their families.

Our schools span from Birmingham to Bury, supporting students from diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic statuses, ensuring equal access to high-quality education.

Shaw Education Trust offers the following benefits:

  • Electric Car Scheme: environmentally friendly vehicles.
  • Access to Medicash Health & Wellbeing Plan.
  • Discount for Teachers Scheme: exclusive discounts from major brands.
  • Free Eye Tests.
  • Cycle to Work Scheme.
  • Opportunities for professional growth through our Institute of Education.

We are committed to making the employment experience rewarding and ensuring the safety and well-being of children and young people.

Working Hours: 32.5 hours, Monday to Friday, 08:45 – 15:45, term time only plus 5 inset days.

Blackfriars Academy is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. All staff and volunteers must share this commitment.

This position is subject to vetting procedures, including online checks and a criminal record check from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). All shortlisted candidates will undergo an online search as part of safer recruitment practices.

We reserve the right to appoint before the closing date as applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis. Early applications are encouraged.

We are an Equal Opportunities employer, and all recruitment practices will reflect this commitment. CVs alone will not be accepted, and successful candidates will be subject to enhanced DBS checks and other employment verifications.
