Job description

Seeking a truly impactful role supporting vulnerable young people in Hull? Tradewind is actively recruiting compassionate and proactive SEN Teaching Assistants for exciting daily and long-term opportunities within Alternative Provisions across the city. If you possess experience in alternative education settings and are driven to make a tangible difference to learning journeys and overall well-being, we want to hear from you.

About the Role & What You'll Do:

Alternative Provisions in Hull provide crucial support for students who have faced barriers in mainstream education and require a highly tailored approach. As an SEN Teaching Assistant in these dynamic environments, your role will be multifaceted and deeply rewarding. You will be actively involved in:

  • Providing vital 1:1 and small group support: Working closely with students to help them access pre-planned work, reinforce learning, and develop essential skills in core subjects and beyond.
  • Managing and de-escalating challenging behaviours: Utilising your understanding of SEMH and other complex needs to apply proactive strategies, build rapport, and support students in self-regulating and making positive choices.
  • Fostering engagement and participation: Employing creative and adaptive strategies to make learning accessible and enjoyable, helping students who may be disengaged to re-connect with their education.
  • Creating a safe, nurturing, and inclusive atmosphere: Building strong, trusting relationships with students, acting as a consistent and positive role model, and ensuring a supportive environment where every student feels valued.
  • Contributing to students' holistic development: Supporting not only academic progress but also their social, emotional, and mental health through structured activities, positive reinforcement, and consistent guidance.
  • Collaborating closely with staff: Working as part of a dedicated team alongside teachers and other professionals to implement individualised education plans (IEPs) and communicate student progress and challenges effectively.

You Will Have:

  • Prior experience working with children or young people, ideally within an SEN, Alternative Provision (AP), or Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) setting.
  • A strong understanding of various Special Educational Needs (e.g., SEMH, ASD, ADHD, learning difficulties) and effective strategies for support.
  • Hold a valid Enhanced DBS on the Update Service or be willing to obtain one.
  • Two obtainable professional references that can attest to your suitability for this role.
  • Demonstrated flexibility and adaptability, with a willingness to travel to different Alternative Provisions across Hull as required.
  • An open-minded and committed approach to supporting children with a wide range of differing learning abilities and behavioural needs.

Working with Tradewind, you will also benefit from:

  • Access to free, accredited Continued Professional Development (CPD) through our partnership with the National College, including vital training in areas like safeguarding, behaviour management, de-escalation techniques, and supporting complex needs.
  • Competitive daily rates and weekly pay.
  • Ongoing support and guidance from your dedicated Tradewind consultant.
  • The chance to make a profound and lasting impact on the lives of young people in a unique and incredibly rewarding educational environment.
