The position is based at our SEN School in Silsoe, Bedfordshire.

Esland schools currently support vulnerable young people aged 8-18 years with SEMH.

Key Responsibilities for a SEN Teacher

  1. Ensure safeguarding of all young people underpins every decision made.
  2. Plan, prepare and deliver high-quality lessons, demonstrating outstanding teaching and learning.
  3. Contribute to our culture of continual improvement and high standards in teaching through coaching, team-teaching, and demonstrating excellence.
  4. Ensure effective pastoral care of all children in the school including behaviour management, child protection, and safeguarding.
  5. Maintain high standards of teaching and learning across several curriculum subjects.
  6. Identify strategies to overcome individual pupils’ barriers to learning.
  7. Carry out duties as identified in the Teacher Standards.
  8. Meet all Teacher Standards.
  9. Contribute to the Annual Review of EHCPs.
  10. Write and implement Individual Learning Plans (ILPs).
  11. Attend PEP reviews, if necessary, and complete PEP documentation ensuring targets are achieved and the pupil’s voice is heard.

Essential Requirements for a SEN Teacher

Qualifications and Experience

  • Qualified Teacher Status
  • Degree qualification or equivalent
  • Excellent teaching skills
  • Experience as a KS2/KS3/KS4 teacher
  • Ability to teach across a range of curriculum subjects, including English, Maths, and Science

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Expert understanding of innovative pedagogy
  • Experience of assessment without levels, including tracking pupil progress
  • Knowledge of statutory assessment arrangements at KS4
  • Understanding of strategies to manage pupil behaviour
  • Knowledge of inclusion, SEMH, EAL, bilingual learners, minority ethnic achievement, and equality issues
  • Understanding of safeguarding, especially for vulnerable and disadvantaged pupils
  • Strategies for closing the achievement gap
  • Willingness to teach multiple subjects
  • Understanding of various SEND needs, including SEMH
  • Ability to develop young people's educational and social skills
  • Effective relationship-building with young people, families, and external agencies
  • Respect for pupils’ views and wishes
  • Resource management and effective deployment
  • High standards and positive role modeling
  • Self-belief, initiative, and proactive attitude
  • Effective communication skills
  • Approachable, caring, and kind demeanor
  • Ability to work under pressure, with a sense of humor and balanced work/life approach
  • Ability to establish constructive relationships with parents/carers and the community
  • Strong values aligned with the school’s ethos
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development
  • Degree/qualification in psychology and higher degree or equivalent
