Job description

SEN Teacher – Mainstream Primary School – Huntingdon

Are you an experienced SEN Teacher looking for a rewarding opportunity where you can make a real difference?

We’re looking for a caring, enthusiastic and dedicated SEN Teacher with previous experience supporting children with special educational needs to join a large, welcoming mainstream primary school in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, from January 2027.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a teacher who is passionate about Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and has the experience, knowledge and understanding needed to support children with a range of additional learning needs.

You’ll be working with a dedicated SEN class within a large mainstream primary school, creating a nurturing, structured and engaging learning environment where every child feels supported and encouraged to reach their full potential.

Previous experience working with children with special educational needs is essential for this position. We would welcome applications from experienced SEN Teachers or qualified Primary Teachers who have significant experience supporting pupils with SEND.

The role

As the SEN Teacher, you'll take responsibility for planning and delivering engaging, personalised learning opportunities for a class of pupils with special educational needs within a mainstream primary school.

You’ll need to draw on your previous SEND experience to adapt your teaching, manage different learning needs and create a positive classroom environment where children feel safe, understood and ready to learn.

A key part of the role will be understanding the individual needs of each pupil and using appropriate teaching strategies to help them make meaningful progress, both academically and in their personal and social development.

You’ll work closely with Teaching Assistants, the school's SENCO and wider staff team to provide consistent, high-quality support.

  • Plan and deliver differentiated lessons tailored to pupils' individual learning needs and abilities
  • Use your previous SEND experience to support children with a range of additional needs
  • Create a structured, nurturing and inclusive classroom environment
  • Adapt teaching methods and resources to make learning accessible to all pupils
  • Support children with communication, social interaction, emotional regulation and independence
  • Use practical, visual and sensory approaches to engage pupils in learning
  • Implement effective behaviour support strategies appropriate to individual pupils
  • Work closely with Teaching Assistants to provide consistent support throughout the school day
  • Monitor and assess individual progress, adapting learning activities where necessary
  • Support pupils with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) and individual learning targets
  • Build positive relationships with parents, carers and other professionals
  • Celebrate individual achievements and help children develop confidence and independence

The school is looking for someone who can confidently use their previous experience of working with children with SEND to establish positive routines, build strong relationships and provide the consistency pupils need to thrive.

What we're looking for

To be considered for this SEN Teacher position, you will need:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in the UK
  • Previous experience working with children with special educational needs – essential
  • Experience teaching within a primary school or specialist SEND setting
  • A good understanding of SEND and the different strategies used to support pupils with additional needs
  • Experience adapting lessons and learning activities to meet individual needs
  • Confidence supporting children with communication difficulties, learning needs and other additional needs
  • A patient, nurturing and resilient approach to teaching
  • Strong behaviour management skills and an understanding of positive behaviour support strategies
  • The ability to work effectively with Teaching Assistants, SENCOs and other professionals
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills
  • An enhanced DBS on the Update Service or willingness to complete the required clearance
  • Two positive references covering your recent teaching experience

Please note: This position requires previous practical experience working with children with SEND. Applications from teachers without relevant SEND experience will not be suitable for this particular role.

You'll benefit from:
  • £140–£232 per day, depending on experience and qualifications
  • Excellent rates of pay through PAYE
  • The opportunity to teach a dedicated SEN class within a large mainstream primary school
  • A supportive school environment and experienced staff team
