Job Title: SEMH Teaching Assistant (Secondary)

SEMH Teaching Assistant (TA) – Secondary
Location: Gateshead
Salary: £84 - £108 per day (depending on experience)
Start Date: ASAP
Contract Type: Daily Supply | Long-Term Placements Available

Are you passionate about supporting young people with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs? Do you want to make a real impact on their education and well-being? This could be just the opportunity you’ve been looking for.

GSL Education is working with a brilliant secondary school in Gateshead to recruit a dedicated and compassionate SEMH Teaching Assistant. In this vital role, you'll help students overcome barriers to learning, boost their confidence, and achieve their full potential.

About the Role:
You'll be supporting students with additional emotional and behavioural needs—both in class and during breakout sessions. Your day will involve helping pupils focus, regulating emotions, and engaging positively with school life.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Provide 1:1 and small group support for students with SEMH needs
  2. Assist with lesson delivery, adapting resources when needed
  3. Monitor progress and feed back to teachers
  4. Create a calm, structured environment for learning
  5. Help students build self-regulation and resilience
  6. Implement behaviour support strategies and interventions
  7. Liaise with staff, families, and external support agencies

What We’re Looking For:

  1. Relevant background in education, psychology, youth work or similar
  2. Experience working with secondary-aged pupils with SEMH needs
  3. Understanding of trauma-informed practice and behaviour support
  4. Calm, nurturing, and patient nature
  5. Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  6. Ability to adapt in a dynamic school environment
  7. Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to apply)
