About the Role

As a SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting students who face social, emotional, and mental health challenges. Working closely with teachers and pastoral staff, you will help create a safe, inclusive, and structured learning environment. Your role will involve delivering targeted interventions, promoting emotional regulation, and encouraging positive behaviour and engagement in learning.

Key Responsibilities of SEMH Teaching Assistant (SEMH TA)

  • Support Individual Needs: Work one-on-one or in small groups with students to provide tailored emotional and behavioural support.
  • Promote Positive Behaviour: Use de-escalation techniques and behaviour management strategies to support students in managing their emotions and actions.
  • Collaborate with Staff: Work alongside teachers, SENCOs, and pastoral teams to implement personalised support plans and monitor progress.
  • Encourage Engagement: Help students re-engage with learning by building trust, offering encouragement, and celebrating achievements.
  • Safeguard and Support: Maintain a safe and supportive environment, ensuring the wellbeing of all students and adhering to safeguarding protocols.
  • Liaise with Professionals: Work with external agencies and professionals to ensure a holistic approach to student support.

Requirements of SEMH Teaching Assistant (SEMH TA)

  • Previous experience supporting students with SEMH needs or in a similar role.
  • A calm, patient, and empathetic approach to working with young people.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to remain composed in challenging situations.
  • Relevant qualifications or training in SEMH, behaviour management, or education are desirable.
