Job summary

Education World Ltd is seeking a compassionate SEMH Support Assistant to work with secondary students in Sunderland. The role focuses on building trust, delivering tailored support, and promoting emotional regulation and education engagement.

You will collaborate with families and school staff, implement de-escalation strategies, and monitor progress, with options for full-time and flexible work arrangements. DBS checks and safeguarding are essential components of the role.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience working with young people with SEMH needs and challenging behaviour.
  • Understanding factors contributing to school avoidance and challenging behaviour.
  • Ability to manage challenging behaviour and implement de-escalation strategies.
  • Patience, empathy, resilience, and calm under pressure.
  • Excellent communication and rapport-building with hard-to-reach young people.
  • Current Enhanced DBS update service or willingness to apply.
  • Desirable qualifications in behaviour management, trauma-informed practice, or mental health support.

Responsibilities

  • Provide one-to-one and small group support to secondary age students with SEMH needs.
  • Build trusting relationships with disengaged or vulnerable learners.
  • Develop and deliver individualised support strategies to address avoidance and engagement.
  • Support emotional regulation, coping strategies, and readiness to participate in education.
  • Collaborate with families, school staff, and other professionals for a coordinated approach.
  • Implement de-escalation techniques and behaviour management during challenging situations.
  • Facilitate activities that develop social skills and emotional wellbeing.
  • Act as a positive role model and advocate for students.
  • Monitor and record progress and provide feedback to stakeholders.
