Job summary

William Henry Smith Specialist College in Calverley is seeking a Teaching Support Practitioner to assist learners with SEMH and SEND, under teacher guidance, delivering targeted interventions and supportive relationships to enable access to the curriculum.

You will contribute to learning, wellbeing and personal development, working with teachers, therapists and other professionals to ensure consistent support and positive outcomes while safeguarding learners.

Qualifications

• Experience supporting learners in further or specialist education.
• Understand SEMH needs and related communication/sensory differences.
• Ability to adapt support with independence-focused strategies.
• Calm, consistent approaches to distress and behaviour.
• Respectful communication; safeguarding of confidential information.
• Team player who challenges unsafe practice appropriately.

Responsibilities

• Deliver targeted interventions and small-group support.
• Support learners to access learning and develop independence.
• Implement Positive Behaviour Support plans.
• Use de‑escalation strategies for emotional regulation.
• Observe wellbeing/behaviour and maintain records.
• Act as Keyworker and coordinate with staff and families.
• Prepare safe, organized learning environments and support enrichment.
