Job summary

Milk Education are recruiting for a dedicated, compassionate SEMH Learning Support Assistant to join a specialist SEMH school in Teesside, supporting children and young people aged 2-19.

You will work 1:1 and in small groups using trauma-informed approaches to support behaviour, emotions and engagement, alongside a supportive multi-disciplinary team.

Qualifications

  • Experience with SEMH or challenging behaviour in school or care setting.
  • Calm, patient and resilient approach.
  • Knowledge of behaviour management and de-escalation strategies.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Genuine passion for supporting pupils with SEMH needs.

Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 and small group support for pupils with SEMH needs across a range of ages.
  • Support pupils to regulate emotions and manage behaviour using trauma-informed and restorative approaches.
  • Assist the class teacher in delivering engaging, differentiated lessons.
  • Help create a calm, safe and structured learning environment.
  • Implement behaviour support plans, risk assessments and individual education plans.
  • Build strong, trusting relationships with pupils to support engagement and progress.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, pastoral staff, parents/carers and external professionals.

SEMH Learning Support Assistant

Milk Education are recruiting for a dedicated, compassionate and resilient SEMH Learning Support Assistant to join a specialist SEMH school in Teesside, supporting children and young people aged 2-19. This role is suitable for experienced support staff or individuals looking to develop their career within SEMH and alternative provision.

You will be joining a highly supportive and inclusive school that places relationships, emotional wellbeing and positive behaviour at the centre of its approach. The school provides a structured, nurturing environment and uses tailored strategies to support pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs.

Learning Support Assistant Roles & Responsibilities:
  • Provide 1:1 and small group support for pupils with SEMH needs across a range of ages.

Learning Support Assistant Must-Haves:
  • Experience working with children or young people with SEMH or challenging behaviour (school or care setting)
  • Experience working with vulnerable adults (not essential)
  • A calm, patient and resilient approach
  • Knowledge of effective behaviour management and de-escalation strategies
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • A genuine passion for supporting pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs
