Job description

Salary: £28,536 - £31,310 per year dependent on skills & experience

Contract Type: Permanent

Position Type: Part Time

Hours: 18 hours per week

Job title: Self Help Coach (Carers Service)

Location: This post is based at LinkLiving’s Kirkcaldy office but involves travel throughout Fife.

Hours of Work: 18 per week (3 days per week, days to be agreed)

Are you passionate about helping people to live a better life? Do you want to work for a charity where your health and wellbeing matter just as much as the people you support? Do you want to be part of a trauma-informed team where you will be supported to develop creative and flexible ways of working?

At LinkLiving, our values and people are at the heart of everything we do including how we recruit our staff. It is important for us to find people who share our values, which are:

Empathy (listen to and understand an individual’s needs and circumstances)

Respect (treat others the way they wish to be treated)

Integrity (be honest and have strong moral principles)

Caring (show kindness and concern for others)

LinkLiving is a Scottish health and wellbeing charity that supports people to manage or overcome the effects of negative life experiences (including trauma, mental health challenges, poverty and inequality) so that they can build on their strengths and aspirations in order to live their best possible lives. We support people through a range of models including:

• Personal development and employability programmes

• Self-help coaching

The Service

Fife Carers' Self-Help Project

The Carers’ Self-Help Project provides support in Fife for carers of children, young people, and adults with autistic spectrum conditions or with additional support needs who struggle with their own mental health. The service welcomes carers who have a loved one with a diagnosis and those who are on the diagnosis pathway.

This service offers up to six, free, one-hour 1:1 coaching sessions, teaching self-care techniques to manage any current difficulties clients are experiencing. Group sessions are also available.

Supported self-help is a short-term process which uses materials and techniques tailored to client’s needs. We use an approach which considers how stress makes people feel, think, and behave, and cope with the associated physical symptoms. This approach is based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, or CBT.

The Job

The remit of this post is to provide stress support to parents, family members or any carer of an individual who has been diagnosed as or is pending a diagnosis of being on the autistic spectrum or with additional support needs using a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy based approach. This involves assisting people to access and use self help materials and signposting people to other relevant agencies when appropriate. You will need to develop and maintain respectful and empowering relationships with service users so that they feel valued and supported and in control of their own lives.

The post holder will work within our existing Self Help Team based at West Bridge Mill in Kirkcaldy, Fife. The post holder will be expected to meet with service users in various community sites throughout Fife and therefore flexibility to travel to these areas is essential

About You

You are a compassionate and proactive individual with a strong understanding of the challenges faced by service users, particularly those who are excluded or marginalized. Your approach is person-centred, and you have a proven ability to build equal, respectful, and positive relationships with individuals and external agencies alike.

Empathy and active listening are central to how you support others, and you're sensitive and responsive to the emotional and social health needs of those you work with. You have experience working one-to-one, offering practical, tailored support, and you're familiar with self-help resources for carers of individuals with autism and additional support needs, with a clear commitment to promoting their use.

As a valued team member, you contribute actively to a supportive working environment. You are calm under pressure, able to problem-solve effectively during crises, and your communication skills are adaptable to a variety of situations.

Organised and reliable, you can collect data accurately and maintain detailed records. Your flexible and practical approach means you're ready to meet the changing needs of the role. A current driving licence and access to a roadworthy, reliable car allows you to support service users in a range of settings.
