Job description

The Security Systems Operator will be part of a 24-hour team working in the Security Operations Centre on a shift basis. The role involves operating and maintaining surveillance equipment to monitor for crimes, trespass, and alarms, as well as gathering intelligence for police forces.

The role includes processing and prioritising incoming CCTV and Body Worn Camera (BWC) footage requests, recovering data from various systems, and working closely with the British Transport Police, Home Office Police Forces, and internal stakeholders to provide high-quality evidence footage.

Monitoring station-based alarms and call points around the clock, supporting customers and managers, and responding appropriately to notifications are key responsibilities. The role also involves identifying suspicious or unusual behaviour on the network.

You will liaise with GWR, Network Rail, police, emergency services, and other security agencies as needed.

The Security Systems Operator will apply knowledge of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act (1984) and the Criminal Procedures and Investigations Act (1996) to assist in timely evidence submission to the police.

Main responsibilities include:

  1. Coordinating delivery and collection of CCTV/BWC footage, prioritising workload.
  2. Ensuring evidential integrity by downloading and securing all primary evidence, producing Master and Working copies.
  3. Applying forensic controls to all evidence, including packaging, exhibiting, and documenting witness statements.
  4. Responding to alarm activations, verifying their validity, and initiating appropriate responses.
  5. Reporting and managing system faults with relevant departments or contractors.
  6. Maintaining incident logs, preparing reports, and keeping accurate records.
  7. Troubleshooting equipment malfunctions and reporting issues.

Candidate requirements:

  • Self-motivated, discreet, and able to exercise initiative.
  • Effective time management skills.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information confidentially.
  • Compliance with regulations within set timescales.
  • Quick, logical thinking to respond to incidents or emergencies.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Experience in stakeholder relationship management.
  • Proficiency in Office 365 applications; knowledge of GWR network, TRUST, Web Gemini, and Integrale is advantageous.
  • Excellent observational skills and attention to detail.

Rewards and benefits:

Includes ongoing training, pension scheme, free rail travel for you and your family, health care plans, discounts, and employee assistance programs.
