Job description

The Security Manager - Reader Invigilation is responsible for the security and invigilation of the document reading rooms at The National Archives (TNA). Their role is vitally important in ensuring the security of the collection whilst offering a welcoming experience to our visitors and allowing them to make the most of their visit.

With over thirty thousand visitors to our reading rooms every year, it is a busy environment that needs to be diligently and calmly overseen to maintain a high level of security for our collection, which exceeds 17 million documents.

The post directly line manages circa seven Reader Invigilation Officers, identifying opportunities for staff development, managing performance, and ensuring that staff adhere to the expected standards.

The successful applicant will have a recognised security qualification with demonstrable experience of supervising security or invigilation teams.

As a custodian of the nation’s history, this person will be a team player with outstanding interpersonal skills, the ability to stay calm under pressure, and experience in delivering excellent customer service. They will also be a highly motivated, adaptable, and well-organised individual, with a diligent and methodical approach.

Working collaboratively with the Front of House Team, they will be operating in a busy environment and will also act as an ambassador for The National Archives when welcoming visitors and users of our services.
