Job summary

United Utilities is looking for a Security Field Engineer to maintain, install and optimise physical security assets across reservoirs, aqueducts, and water treatment sites in Cumbria. You will ensure systems like IP CCTV, access control, and intrusion detectors remain reliable and compliant, supporting operational resilience and safety.

This site-based role requires a time-served apprenticeship with an HNC/ONC in Electrical/Instrumentation or Automation, and the ability to work independently at

Qualifications

  • Time-served apprenticeship or equivalent with academic qualifications ideally to HNC or ONC in Electrical/Instrumentation/Control & Automation.
  • Ability to work in a team but also alone, resilient and self-motivated with strong problem-solving skills and technical competence.
  • Experience with physical security installations including intruder, perimeter and IP CCTV.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver planned and reactive maintenance for physical security systems across sites.
  • Diagnose faults and restore equipment to optimum performance.
  • Carry out planned preventative maintenance and keep accurate asset and maintenance records.
  • Support major infrastructure projects and manage defined maintenance budgets and resources.

Job description

Are you an experienced engineer with a background in physical security systems, electrical engineering, instrumentation, or control systems? Do you thrive on solving technical challenges and want to play a key role in protecting critical national infrastructure?

We're looking for a Security Field Engineer to join a dedicated team responsible for the maintenance, installation, and optimisation of security assets across reservoirs, aqueducts, and water and wastewater treatment sites.

This is a fantastic opportunity to work with advanced security technologies in a varied field-based role where no two days are the same.

The Role

As a Security Field Engineer, you will be responsible for the planned and reactive maintenance of physical security systems across a wide portfolio of operational sites.

Working within a fast-paced maintenance environment, you'll ensure security assets remain fully operational, compliant, and effective while supporting operational resilience and minimising environmental impact.

From fault diagnosis and repairs to supporting major infrastructure projects, you'll play a vital role in safeguarding critical assets and maintaining operational continuity.

What You'll Be Doing

In this role, you will:

  • Deliver efficient maintenance, repair, and installation services for physical security systems.
  • Diagnose faults and restore equipment to optimum performance.
  • Carry out planned preventative and proactive maintenance activities.
  • Ensure all work is completed in line with Health & Safety regulations and company policies.
  • Maintain accurate asset, performance, and repair records.
  • Identify recurring faults and recommend long-term engineering solutions.
  • Support operational and capital projects to ensure maintainable and reliable asset designs.
  • Manage defined maintenance budgets and resources responsibly.
  • Continuously develop and maintain technical skills and competencies.
  • Participate in an out-of-hours standby rota as required.

You’ll be comfortable working independently at remote sites as well as collaborating with colleagues and stakeholders across the business.

What We're Looking For

To be successful in this role you must be a time served apprentice or equivalent, supported with academic qualifications ideally to HNC or minimum ONC equivalent in an Electrical, Instrumentation and/or Control and Automation subject.

To be considered for this role you must have:

  • The ability to work in a team but also alone, be resilient, self-motivated, with strong problem-solving skills and possess the required technical competence
  • Able and willing to diversify into specialised areas of maintenance, as required, such as but not limited to IP Switching & Routing
  • Diagnostic, organisational, planning, communication and computer skills
  • Industry Experience
  • Good working knowledge with hardwired analogue and digital control systems.
  • Working knowledge of telemetry devices and wide area communications basics.
  • Working knowledge of Information Security good practice.
  • Technical skills and competency in the maintenance of physical security installations, including intruder, perimeter & hatch detection, HV fences, access control, and IP CCTV.

  • Willing to develop expertise in specialist technologies, including IP Switching and Routing.

A full UK driving licence is required for this role
