Job summary

SCS Railways is seeking a Section Engineer to join the Earthworks & Structures Delivery Unit in Euston. You will lead site engineers, develop 4‑week programmes, ensure setting-out and QA procedures, and coordinate with managers, subcontractors and safety teams on a busy HS2 package.

The role offers exposure to major tunnelling and bridge works in central London, with a strong focus on safety, quality and on‑time delivery within a live rail environment.

Qualifications

  • Degree level qualification (or equivalent) in a Civil Engineering allied subject or HNC in Civil Engineering.
  • Understanding of Engineering Principles.
  • Technical knowledge of construction techniques and best practices.
  • Computer competence (MS Word, Excel, Document control system).
  • Relevant CSCS Card
  • Training in Health & Safety and Environmental management
  • Presentation Skills Training (as they deliver inductions / briefings etc).

Responsibilities

  • Manage and coordinate the activities of site engineers to ensure setting-out and QA are performed on time.
  • Develop 4-weekly programmes with site engineers and measure productivity.
  • Prepare inspection and test plans, risk assessments and method statements.
  • Communicate with works managers, foremen, gangers, workforce and sub-contractors.
  • Notify QA/QS teams of non-conformances and client/designer instructions; maintain records.
  • Procurement of Plant, Materials and Equipment through Requisitions.
  • Keep a full daily site diary with changes/variations and subcontractor attendance.
  • Adhere to project policies and procedures.

Job description

We currently have a vacancy for a Section Engineer within our Earthworks & Structures Delivery Unit, working in Euston. The Euston Approaches delivery team are restarting works on Euston Scissor Box and Park Village East starting in early 2026. The nature of the works involves top-down construction with a combination of piling, sheet piling, complex propping schemes, bulk earthworks, FRC and pre-cast concrete. This scope of works is paired with the already ongoing works for Hampstead Road Bridge (HRB), Euston Throat Retained Cut (ETRC) and the finishing works on Granby Terrace Bridge (GTB) and Cavern Pre-TBM mitigation works. As a result, we are now looking to use our experienced staff across the project to assist us in the delivery of this increased scope and remaining scope at Euston. This opportunity provides the potential for working in a unique environment within Central London, neighboured by live Network rail Infrastructure, live highways and occupied residential / commercial buildings.

Role Responsibility
  • Managing and co-ordinating the activities of the site engineers to ensure all setting-out and quality control procedures are performed in a timely and efficient manner, so as not to impede the construction programme.
  • Develop 4-weekly programmes with site engineer and simple benchmark productivity measures for the workforce and assess actual programme and productivity achieved for review at weekly progress meetings to include resource requirements.
  • Complete inspection and test plans, risk assessments and method statements for the control of the works ensuring that all necessary documentation, as required by these statements and plans, is produced in a timely manner.
  • Communicate with works managers, foremen, gangers, workforce and sub-contractors to ensure full understanding of information provided.
  • Communicate to the QA and QS teams non-conformances, and any instructions received from the client / designer / RE's staff. Ensure that comprehensive records of resources employed on additional works are maintained.
  • Procurement of Plant, Materials and Equipment through Requisitions.
  • Keep a full and accurate daily site diary, including any changes / variations, subcontractors' attendance, and records of work related discussions with client / designer / RE / project team.
  • Adherence to project policies and procedures.
Assets & Scope
  • Euston Scissor Box (Main Works) until handover to Tunnels
  • Euston Scissor Box - Headhouse scope until handover to Shafts & Headhouses

Essential
  • Degree level qualification (or equivalent) in a Civil Engineering allied subject or HNC in Civil Engineering and vocational training in Engineering

  • Computer competence (MS Word, Excel, Document control system).

Desirable
  • Computer competence (CAD, Primavera software, Synchro)., A physical or mental impairment, which has a substantial and long-term effect (over 12 months) adverse effect on your ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities
  • Demonstrated in your application and pre-interview stage that you meet the minimum job criteria and person specification for the role

The Skanska | Costain | STRABAG (SCS JV) is delivering the HS2 London Tunnels Contract. Scope of works includes twin-bored tunnels (TBM), SCL tunnels, shaft sinking, bridge demolition and reconstruction, services diversions, earthworks and the construction of site compounds.
