Job summary

Balfour Beatty Group is seeking a Section Engineer for the Netherton Hub project near Aberdeen, a major energy infrastructure development supporting the ASTI programme. You will lead defined civils packages, coordinate earthworks, drainage, concrete and temporary works, and ensure safe delivery to programme and quality standards.

Qualifications

  • An experienced Section Engineer with a strong background in civil engineering projects across Scotland.
  • Proven experience delivering defined sections of work on infrastructure, energy, highways, or general civils projects.
  • Sound technical knowledge across core civils activities including earthworks, drainage, reinforced concrete, and temporary works.
  • Confident in setting-out, QA documentation, method statements, and risk assessments.
  • Experience coordinating subcontractors and site teams to ensure works are delivered safely, on programme, and to specification.
  • Strong understanding of health, safety, quality, and environmental requirements on large construction sites.
  • Ability to work effectively with Site Agents, Engineers, and Project Management teams in a collaborative environment.
  • Proactive, organised, and capable of managing multiple site priorities.
  • Familiarity with Scottish standards and site conditions is highly desirable.
  • Relevant civil engineering qualification (HNC/HND/Degree or equivalent experience).

Responsibilities

  • Take responsibility for delivery of defined sections of work across the civils package.
  • Support planning, coordination, and execution of core civils works (earthworks, drainage, concrete, ducting, access).
  • Set out works and maintain engineering control and survey data.
  • Manage QA documentation, inspection and test plans, and as-built records.
  • Assist with preparation and implementation of method statements, risk assessments, and temporary works.
  • Coordinate subcontractors and direct labour for safe, on-time delivery.
  • Work with Site Agent, Sub Agent, and project team to resolve technical queries.
  • Monitor progress against programme and identify/mitigate risks.
  • Ensure compliance with health, safety, quality and environmental standards.
  • Contribute to collaborative site culture aligned with BB values.

The Netherton Hub is a major new energy infrastructure development located near Peterhead in Aberdeenshire, forming a key part of SSEN Transmission’s multi‑billion‑pound Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment (ASTI) programme and its wider Pathway to 2030 upgrade of the Scottish transmission network.

Designed to strengthen the UK’s ability to transport renewable electricity from the north of Scotland to high‑demand centres nationwide, the hub will incorporate a new High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) converter station, a 400 kV substation, a 132 kV substation, and associated operational facilities. Once complete, it will enable efficient long‑distance transmission of offshore and onshore renewable energy, supporting both UK and Scottish Government net‑zero targets while delivering significant economic benefits, job creation, and local supply‑chain opportunities.

What you’ll be doing
  • Taking responsibility for the delivery of defined sections of work across the ASTIcivils package, ensuring activities are completed safely, to programme, and to the required quality standards
  • Supporting the planning, coordination, and execution of core civils works, including earthworks, drainage, reinforced concrete structures, ducting, and access infrastructure
  • Setting out works and maintaining accurate engineering control and survey data in line with project requirements
  • Managing and maintaining QA documentation, inspection and test plans, and as‑built records
  • Assisting with the preparation and implementation of method statements, risk assessments, and temporary works
  • Coordinating subcontractors and direct labour to ensure efficient and safe site operations
  • Working closely with the Site Agent, Sub Agent, and wider project team to resolve technical queries and maintain progress
  • Monitoring progress against programme and supporting the identification and mitigation of risks and constraints
  • Ensuring full compliance with Balfour Beatty’s health, safety, quality, and environmental standards
  • Contributing to a positive, collaborative site culture aligned with Balfour Beatty values and behaviours
Who we’re looking for
