Job summary

Second Engineer – Seagoing

Serco Maritime Services, Kyle of Lochalsh

Permanent, full time, 6 weeks on / 3 weeks off – opportunity to live afloat if required.

For applicants living more than 80 miles from Kyle of Lochalsh, Serco will pay a maximum of £0.45 per mile for travel to and from base.

We have a great opportunity to join a professional, multi-skilled team operating from beautiful Kyle of Lochalsh for customers who expect and deserve the best service. Serco Maritime Services delivers maritime support packages tailored to our customers’ needs within a national accreditation framework. As owners and operators of specialist vessels, we provide world‑class integrated maritime services both in the UK and abroad, including dive support, military training, submarine rescue exercises, target/test equipment deployment/recovery and passenger transfers.

Responsibilities
  • Carry out planned maintenance, emergency maintenance and repair work for continuous survey of all propulsion, auxiliary and deck machinery, air conditioning, domestic installations, boilers, fittings and structures both within and outside the machinery room spaces, following discussions with the Chief Engineer.
  • Personally supervise work on main engine and auxiliaries to ensure a planned and coordinated performance of maintenance duties.
  • Keep the Chief Engineer advised of maintenance progress at all times.
  • Ensure machinery and the machinery area remain clean, with engine room stairs, ladders and walkways kept clear.
  • Monitor, control and document the use of spare parts and stores.
  • Liaise with other ship staff to give feedback and early warning to the Chief Engineer regarding any potential hazards.
  • Be fully conversant with all safety equipment, emergency procedures and contingency plans and ensure all engine room staff are trained and proficient.
  • Be familiar with safety routines and ensure necessary safeguards are in place before any maintenance/repair work commences.
  • Be fully conversant with the company Safety Management System – specifically:
    • Permit to Work/Tag Out Systems
    • Shipboard Management Team
    • Shipboard Safety Committee
Essential Qualifications / Experience
  • Certificate of Competence as Second Engineer (3000kW) or higher.
  • STCW Personal Survival Techniques (5‑year refresher).
  • STCW Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (5‑year refresher).
  • STCW Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (5‑year refresher).
  • STCW Certificate of Proficiency in Survival Craft (5‑year refresher).
  • STCW Proficiency in Designated Security Duties (5‑year refresher).
  • STCW Elementary First Aid.
  • Unrestricted ENG1.
  • Valid passport.
  • Methodical approach to work.
Desirable Skills, Knowledge and Qualifications
  • Ship’s Safety Officer – preferred.
  • Manual Handling.
  • Familiarisation with company/industry specific systems:
    • Company Safety Management System (SMS)
    • Integrated Management System (IMS)
    • International Safety Management (ISM)
    • International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS)
    • Code of Safe Working Practices (CoSWP)
    • International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO)
