Job Title: Sea and Road Freight Operator
Location: Southampton, SO40
Salary: 25,000 - 30,000

Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled and detail-driven Sea and Road Freight Operator with solid experience in customs processes and compliance. This role is key in managing the end-to-end movement of cargo via sea and road, while ensuring that all shipments meet regulatory and customs requirements. The ideal candidate will bring hands-on experience in freight coordination, strong knowledge of import/export regulations, and the ability to maintain accurate documentation throughout the shipping cycle.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Coordinate sea and road freight shipments, including booking, loading, documentation, and final delivery.
  2. Manage daily communication with carriers, hauliers, freight forwarders, and customers to ensure on-time performance.
  3. Track and monitor shipment progress, proactively resolving delays or issues.
  4. Prepare and submit customs declarations and supporting documentation for both import and export shipments.
  5. Ensure compliance with HMRC regulations, international trade laws, and commodity classifications (HS Codes).
  6. Liaise with customs brokers, border agents, and government bodies to facilitate smooth customs clearance.
  7. Manage and verify commodity codes, duty/tax calculations, and ensure proper handling of controlled or restricted goods.
  8. Maintain accurate and organised records for all customs entries and audit purposes.
  9. Keep up to date with changes in customs regulations and ensure processes align with current legislation.
  10. Generate and manage shipping documents: Commercial Invoices, Packing Lists, Bills of Lading, Certificates of Origin, etc.
  11. Input and manage shipment data in internal systems, ensuring accuracy and compliance.

Requirements

  1. Experience in freight forwarding or logistics, with specific exposure to customs procedures.
  2. Strong knowledge of sea and road freight operations, Incoterms, and international trade requirements.
  3. Experience using customs declaration systems (e.g., CHIEF, CDS, or similar).
  4. Familiarity with import/export documentation and tariff classification.
  5. Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in data entry and reporting.
  6. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, handle multiple shipments, and meet tight deadlines.
  7. Strong communication and customer service skills.
