Job Summary

The Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) is a part of the Ministry of Defence responsible for the procurement, in-service support, and disposal of the UK’s nuclear submarines. Our work is of unparalleled strategic importance nationally and internationally, ensuring the security of the UK’s continuous at-sea nuclear deterrent (CASD), and delivering some of the most technically complex programmes in defence. At least one of four nuclear-armed submarines, supported by smaller attack submarines, is on patrol at all times: 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

At the SDA, we strive to Support, Deliver and Aspire and put out values at the heart of our recruitment process. We believe that everyone should feel comfortable to be themselves and be supported to do their best work. As part of a diverse and inclusive workforce, our team will find a community to belong to. We believe that, by celebrating different backgrounds and different perspectives, together we’ll achieve the extraordinary.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Job Description

The Dreadnought Alliance has recognised that one of the highest risks to the delivery of Dreadnought into Service is the design, integration and testing of Complex Systems. In order to help address this an Engineering Section has been stood up under the Alliance Chief Engineer. The section will be led by the Deputy Chief Engineer (DCE) Complex Systems and will be responsible as the Complex Systems Major System Approving Authority (MSAA) for Complex Systems Integration on the Dreadnought submarines which includes managing the Off Boat Team and initiatives.

The lead for managing Complex Systems integration with the wider platform, including NSRP, SWS, Electronic Network Infrastructure and Electrical Distribution System is the DCE Complex Systems who will report directly to the Alliance Chief Engineer.

Complex Systems Are Defined Within The SDA As:

An on board system comprising of hardware and software with multiple interfaces with other mechanical, electrical and digital systems that is capable of processing data and operating components automatically or providing a safety related output to the operator. The system will generally:

  • Comprise of dissimilar co-operating sub-systems.
  • Be difficult to digitally model and often require full mock ups for integration testing.
  • Require multiple data translations/transformations to function.

On Dreadnought These Are:

  • Active Vehicle Control (AVC)
  • Platform Management System (PMS)
  • NSRP Data Distribution & Management System (DDMS)
  • Electrical Generation and Distribution System
  • Internal Communication and Platform Distribution System (ICPDS)
  • Combat Systems
  • Hover & Missile Compensating Control System (HMCCS)

Hybrid and flexible working can be considered for this post but will need regular workplace attendance due to security constraints. Candidates are encouraged to discuss options with the recruiting line manager before submitting an application.

As a result of the changes to the UK immigration rules which came in to effect on 1 January 2021, the Ministry of Defence will only offer sponsorship for a skilled worker visa under the points based system, where a role has been deemed to be business critical.
