Job summary

Bluestones Medical Nursing Agency is seeking experienced Scrub Practitioners to support Aneurin Bevan University Health Board across hospital theatres in South East Wales.

As a Scrub Practitioner you will join a multidisciplinary theatre team, maintain sterile technique, prepare instruments, assist surgeons and ensure patient safety throughout procedures. Flexible agency shifts with competitive rates and dedicated consultant support.

Qualifications

• Registered Nurse or ODP with valid NMC/HCPC registration.
• Recent UK Scrub Practitioner experience in operating theatres.
• 6 months' UK experience minimum in a scrub role.
• Knowledge of surgical instruments and sterile procedures.
• Commitment to infection control and patient safety.

Responsibilities

• Provide safe, effective care to patients during surgical procedures.
• Work as part of the sterile surgical team in theatre.
• Prepare and maintain the sterile field throughout surgery.
• Prepare instruments and consumables for procedures.
• Assist surgeons by providing instruments and equipment as needed.
• Maintain aseptic technique and infection prevention standards.
• Count instruments, swabs and needles per policy.
• Ensure equipment is available and functioning.
• Document clinically and accurately.
• Promote patient safety, dignity and comfort throughout the perioperative journey.
• Communicate with surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses and theatre staff.
• Assist with patient transfer and positioning.
• Follow safeguarding and health & safety procedures.
• Respond to emergencies and changes during procedures.

Job Type: Agency | Flexible Shifts | Days, Nights (This will be full-time hours Monday-Friday, starting in September 2026 to November 2026 with potential to extend)

About the Role

Bluestones Medical is recruiting experienced Scrub Practitioners to support Aneurin Bevan University Health Board (ABUHB) across hospital and theatre settings throughout South East Wales.

As a Scrub Practitioner, you will play a key role within the multidisciplinary theatre team, providing safe and effective support throughout surgical procedures. You will work closely with surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses and other theatre professionals to ensure high standards of patient care and safety are maintained.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide safe, effective and compassionate care to patients undergoing surgical procedures.
• Work as part of the sterile surgical team during theatre procedures.
• Prepare and maintain the sterile field before and throughout surgery.
• Prepare surgical instruments, equipment and consumables required for procedures.
• Assist surgeons during procedures by anticipating their requirements and providing appropriate instruments and equipment.
• Maintain strict aseptic technique and infection prevention standards.
• Carry out surgical instrument, swab and needle counts in accordance with hospital policies.
• Ensure all surgical equipment is available, safe and functioning correctly.
• Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation.
• Promote patient safety, dignity and comfort throughout the perioperative journey.
• Communicate effectively with surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses, ODPs and the wider multidisciplinary team.
• Assist with the safe transfer and positioning of patients.
• Follow safeguarding, infection prevention, health and safety and clinical governance procedures.
• Respond appropriately to emergencies and unexpected changes during surgical procedures.

Essential Requirements

• Registered Nurse (RN) or Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) with valid NMC or HCPC registration, as applicable.
• Recent UK experience working as a Scrub Practitioner within an operating theatre environment.
• Minimum of 6 months' recent relevant UK experience.
• Good knowledge of surgical instruments, equipment and sterile procedures.
• Strong understanding of infection prevention and aseptic techniques.
• Ability to anticipate the needs of the surgical team.
• Strong clinical assessment, organisation and decision-making skills.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
• Ability to work effectively under pressure in a fast-paced theatre environment.
• Right to work in the UK.
• Satisfactory employment references.
• Up-to-date mandatory training or willingness to complete.
