Job description

SCPHN students must demonstrate:

  • A strong passion for early intervention and prevention, particularly in supporting Children and Young People (0-19yrs) and families.
  • An understanding of the roles of health visitors and school nurses in addressing health inequalities, especially in ethnically diverse, urban communities like Newham.
  • A commitment to health promotion, safeguarding, and partnership working principles.

Enrolment in a NMC-approved SCPHN School Nursing postgraduate programme (e.g., University of Greenwich) requires dedication to completing academic study and supervised practice during the 52-week full-time course. This includes managing assignments, presentations, critical reflections, case studies, and possibly a public health project.

Proficiency in written and verbal English, with strong academic writing and critical analysis skills, is essential. During training, students are placed in community settings across Newham, engaging fully with practical training under supervision.

Students must:

  • Attend all mandated university study days and practice placement hours.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, punctuality, and reliability.
  • Work according to the NMC Code of Conduct, organisational policies, and safeguarding responsibilities.

Additional qualities include:

  • Cultural sensitivity and non-judgemental practice.
  • Ability to work effectively with interpreters or multilingual families.
  • Awareness of social determinants affecting families in Newham (e.g., housing, migration, poverty, trauma).
  • Understanding of child protection and safeguarding frameworks.
  • Ability to identify signs of neglect, abuse, or developmental delays and take appropriate action under supervision.
  • Familiarity with local policies and referral pathways for vulnerable families, including those affected by domestic abuse, mental health issues, or substance misuse.

Newham is a diverse borough with a young population and ongoing regeneration efforts. It has over 86,000 children and young people, with aims to ensure equal life chances for all.

Since 2017, Newham has offered fully integrated 0-19 health and social care services. The Children's Health Service was rated 'Good' in the 2021 CQC inspection. The borough offers sponsorship for qualified Nurses and Midwives to complete the SCPHN qualification at level 7, fully funded by NHSE. Successful candidates will be paid PO1 (AFC Band 5 equivalent) and can start in January 2026 at the University of Greenwich.

This is an exciting opportunity to shape the future of children's health and services in East London. Are you eager to develop your skills and understanding of public health approaches to reducing health inequalities?

During training, students will be placed in schools and community settings across Newham’s four localities, working with eight teams. Expectations include:

  • Engaging fully with practical training under supervision.
  • Attending all mandated study days and placement hours.
  • Demonstrating professionalism, punctuality, and reliability.
  • Working in accordance with the NMC Code, organisational policies, and safeguarding responsibilities.
