British American Tobacco UK has an exciting opportunity for a Scientist - New Science Capabilities and Foresights (FIXED TERM) in Southampton

What are the key objectives and expectations from this role?

The role will apply a combination of internal and external collaborators to identify and establish new scientific capabilities and scientific foresights across Wellbeing & Stimulation and New Categories. The capabilities will be used to conduct in silico, in vitro, human studies to screen and evaluate their effects. The primary purpose for conducting these studies is to satisfy BAT's duty of care and regulatory obligations, ensuring the business produces efficacious products that are backed by science. A secondary purpose is evaluating emerging science and technology – this includes identifying business opportunities and threats. The role will involve supervising and gathering scientific insights and foresights opportunities to strengthen short to long-term innovation.

What is the direct impact of this role on the team or organization?

Novel capabilities will support BAT's key strategic pillars, particularly enhancing our understanding of our products, especially in Tobacco Harm Reduction. This role directly contributes to BAT’s core purpose of A Better Tomorrow through scientific and technical frameworks that provide methodologies to understand our products and reduce public health impacts.

Your Key Responsibilities Will Include

  • Supporting the translational science framework by designing and optimizing study protocols
  • Providing technical leadership across categories to deliver new-to-business capabilities
  • Translating technical trends in human effects science and technology into business-relevant recommendations
  • Identifying partnerships that could accelerate BAT strategy in Tobacco Harm Reduction, Research, and Science due diligence
  • Reviewing data to advise on future studies
  • Designing and executing studies
  • Interpreting data, reporting, and communicating findings
  • Authorship of publications, patent filing, and conference presentations

What are we looking for?

  • Agility in science, openness to new ideas or technologies, and adopting innovative approaches
  • Understanding of actives in BAT strategy and methodologies for testing effects in preclinical or human studies
  • Knowledge of pharmacology and human physiology
  • Proven communication skills, including external presentations and technical reports/SOPs
  • Experience leading complex scientific research projects
  • Critical thinking for data interpretation and strong conclusions
  • Ability to communicate scientific data effectively to diverse audiences
  • Minimum BSc in a life science or relevant field
