Scientist II – Root Cause Team

As QuidelOrtho continues to grow, we are seeking to appoint a Scientist II – Root Cause Team to join our Technical department in Pencoed on a permanent basis. This role will work a standard day’s shift pattern.

About QuidelOrtho, Pencoed

QuidelOrtho has been manufacturing products in South Wales for over 40 years. Our state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, based in Pencoed, employs over 600 people who are involved in the manufacture and supply of clinical laboratory and immunohematology products to sites across the globe.

Our Pencoed team manufacture a large menu of immunohematology products used in transfusion medicine; in addition to a large menu of immunoassay products encompassing a range of disease categories.

On site we have a range of functions operating globally & locally. All our employees are working towards one common goal, to help save and improve lives through diagnostics.

Your new role:

Reporting to the Technical Lead, the Scientist II is accountable for the technical leadership and oversight of investigations or projects which are owned within the technical group. The scope and weighting of accountabilities will change dependent on in which group the scientist operates: Factory and New Product Introduction Troubleshooting, Root Cause Investigations, Project Portfolio or Restocks.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Day - day leadership of technical projects/ investigations, which can include:
    • Non-conformances
    • root cause investigations
    • projects which are necessary to support uninterrupted production in Operations or smooth transitions for new product introductions
    • Projects/ investigations are of typically low - moderate impact, mostly within site, occasionally cross - site projects/ investigations
  • Responsible for all day - day ownership activities, to include but not limited to:
    • chairing cross functional meetings
    • owning and assigning actions
    • ownership/ oversight of change notices and other quality documentation
    • conducting scientific (IA/IH) lab operations
  • Performing the interpretation & analysis and documentation of scientific data. Providing conclusions and recommendations to the business, based on data extracted from the investigation/project/restock work and document according to QuidelOrtho record keeping practises. This is to be both in written and oral forms. Where required, represent the technical team in cross functional teams.
  • Undertaking relevant hands-on practical work activities in the laboratory. Work will be required for either your own investigations, projects or restocks or for the support of other members of the group. Lab work is also required as part of the general support function of the Technical department. Lab work will include the competent use of lab equipment such as pipettes, balances and where trained, the use of other analytical instruments and Ortho end-user equipment. Ensuring that wen operating within the laboratory, compliance to all relevant GLP, GDP and EHS standards.
  • Be responsible for and assure integrity and quality in accordance with QuidelOrtho's record keeping practices, of all supporting documentation and quality records for projects and investigations.
  • Gain and demonstrate a good working knowledge of the DMAIC problem solving and change control processes and apply appropriately to activities undertaken.
  • Conduct the implementation of improvements as directed and remain open minded to innovative concepts and ideas
  • Drive and coordinate continuous improvement of processes that operate within the group to provide consistently high levels of customer service.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

  • Degree educated in relevant Scientific discipline, or relevant experience, ideally qualified to PhD or similar level
  • Proven understanding of immunoassay/immunohematology from industry experience.
  • Proven leadership capability and track record of leading/ contributing to cross-functional teams within a regulated operational or technical environment.
  • Knowledge of Operations/ Manufacturing and participation in external audits.
  • Computer literate, good laboratory practical skills, can record experimental work accurately and perform data manipulation and analysis. Can interpret and draw conclusions from data generated as part of a technical investigation.
  • Has a good understanding of the principles of immunoassay / Immunohematology.
  • Assumes accountability, drives accountability in others and promotes a positive, results focused attitude.
  • Continuous improvement driven with an understanding of Lean and PEx skills.
  • Team player who instils trust and is calm in a crisis.
  • Highly motivated individual with an ability to drive engagement and to act as a catalyst for change.

  • Ability to assimilate and quickly comprehend complex issues.
