Science Technician – Herne Bay High School

Location:Herne Bay, Kent
Salary:Up to £24,780 (Band 4, pro rata – term time + 2 weeks)
Contract Type:Permanent
Working Pattern:Full-time or part-time (apprenticeship route also available)
Start Date:As soon as possible

Herne Bay High School is seeking a motivated, reliable, and enthusiasticScience Technicianto join our dynamic and supportive Science Department. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone passionate about science and education to play a key role in supporting practical learning in a busy secondary school.

Key Responsibilities

  • Preparing, setting up, and clearing away apparatus and materials for science lessons
  • Assisting teaching staff during practicals
  • Maintaining, repairing, and organising laboratory equipment
  • Cleaning prep rooms and science benches (not floors)
  • Ensuring the cleanliness and tidiness of labs and reporting any issues
  • Carrying out risk assessments and ensuring safe working practices
  • Following Health & Safety guidelines, including CLEAPSS (training provided)
  • Supporting with photocopying and printing as needed
  • Adhering to safeguarding procedures in line with school policies

You will report to theSenior Science TechnicianandHead of Faculty, and will work closely with a team of experienced professionals who are passionate about science and student learning.

What Does “Term Time + 2 Weeks” Mean?

This role follows theschool term calendar, meaning you work during the weeks students are in school, plustwo additional weeks(typically used for set-up, training, or end-of-year preparation).
The salary ispro rata, meaning it is adjusted to reflect the fact that the role does not cover the full calendar year (i.e. it’s based on approx. 39–41 working weeks per year, not 52).

  • Good organisational and communication skills
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Awareness of Health & Safety (especially in a lab environment)
  • A willingness to learn – full training provided, including CLEAPSS guidance

Apprenticeship Option Available

If you’re just starting out or looking to retrain, we also offer aTechnician Apprenticeshiproute. This is ideal for someone enthusiastic about science with a desire to gain experience and a formal qualification on the job.
