Job summary

You will maintain stock, organise stores, assist with risk assessments, and provide First Aid when required, contributing to a safe, productive learning environment for students.

Responsibilities

• Prepare materials, cultures and solutions for practical lessons in line with health and safety standards.
• Assemble apparatus and obtain materials by local purchase; trial practical activities.
• Carry out risk assessments for technician activities and assist in practical classes.
• Maintain stock levels, liaise with suppliers and stores, and deliver resources to rooms.
• Organise resources, clean laboratories, dispose of waste and support a safe and productive learning environment.

Job description

Role Overview:

To provide a technical support service to the science department, including preparation of materials, setting up equipment for practical classes and assisting in practical lessons.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Provide assistance and information as required in the preparation of resources for practical lessons that meet both the health & safety standards and the requirements of the classes involved, including:
   • Preparation of solutions, materials, cultures for living organisms
   • Assembling apparatus
   • Obtaining materials by local purchase.Trialling practical activities
   • Carrying out risk assessments for technician activities
   • Assisting in practical classes
   • Constructing and modifying apparatus
2. Provide general assistance in the safe storage, transit and accessibility of resources, including helping to
   • Ensure that stock levels are maintained and future requirements are identified
   • Ensure the availability of suitable resources
   • Compile orders and to liaise with suppliers and finance departments as/when required
   • Delivery of equipment, materials and organisms to rooms
   • Collection of, checking and returning resources to stores
   • Maintaining resources, including routine repairs
   • Keep up to date with health & safety requirements
   • Caring for plants and animals
3. Assisting the technician team to ensure a healthy, safe and productive work environment through the routine maintenance and cleaning of equipment, laboratories and prep rooms
   • Organising and storing resources
   • General cleaning of laboratory bench surfaces and fixed equipment
   • Cleaning laboratory sinks
   • Cleaning used equipment
   • Disposing of waste materials
   • Preparing standard solutions
