Job description

Science Specialist Teacher: Inspiring Futures in a Therapeutic Setting

Location: Lewes, East Sussex

Student Age Range: 10-19 years

Are you a passionate and dedicated Science educator looking to make a profound difference in the lives of young people? Do you thrive in a supportive, therapeutic environment where knowing the child is as important as teaching the subject?

Who We Are

We are an independent specialist school committed to providing high-quality, therapeutic, and child-centred education. Our students, aged 10 to 19, come from diverse backgrounds and all present with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. Many also have additional Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), including Autism, ADHD, and communication difficulties.

Our approach is deeply rooted in trauma and attachment-informed practices. We provide extensive therapeutic training and support to all staff, fostering a collaborative environment where education and therapy professionals, parents/carers, local authorities, and, most importantly, our students, work together. This closely triangulated approach ensures we secure outstanding outcomes for every child, placing them at the heart of all decision-making.

The Role

We believe that all our educators are primarily teachers of children before they are teachers of subjects. Central to this Science Specialist role is your ability to truly know your students, build professional, nurturing, and positive relationships, and effectively motivate them to learn and succeed.

As our Science Specialist, you will deliver engaging and relevant curricula spanning Entry Level, Functional Skills, Key Stage 3, and GCSE. While you will bring your science expertise, you will also be supported by national subject champions who can assist non-subject specialists in becoming experts at facilitating learning for the unique needs of our students.

We are looking for an inspirational teacher who can create a sense of awe and wonder, making Science real and relevant. You will be adept at planning exciting and engaging learning opportunities that challenge and push students, whether they are working at foundational levels or have a particular talent or passion for the subject.

Our students require exceptional teachers with the ability to manage complex and challenging behaviours. You will understand the importance of providing consistent attention, employing effective communication strategies, balancing consistency with flexibility, and maintaining a non-judgemental approach.

We highly value our teachers' contributions to the ongoing development of our school. You will have the opportunity to help shape both our academic curriculum and our extracurricular offerings, bringing your own interests and passions to enrich our students' experiences.

Benefits And Rewards

  • Staff laptop and mobile phone
  • Competitive salary
  • Extensive training and professional qualification opportunities
  • Small class sizes with specialist TA support
  • The chance to be part of an expanding, national organisation that recognises skill, effort, and potential and grows its own leadership teams
  • Enhanced occupational sickness scheme
  • Flexible pension
  • Regular therapeutic and supportive supervision
  • Employee benefit service with access to wellbeing services, salary sacrifice schemes, high street vouchers, and discounts on eating out and takeaways
