Business area introduction

The London-based Banking and Corporate Finance (BCF) team is the front office relationship management team covering UK headquartered clients and UK subsidiaries of multinational corporates. The BCF Team is a high performing, integrated team where you will gain experience by performing a wide range of tasks, and gain exposure to different client sectors and countries; providing continuous learning and development opportunities. The business has grown significantly in recent years, and the new Associate will complement the existing team. The BCF Team’s main objective is to manage and support the bank’s SCIB client base in connection with all Santander global banking products. The team is supported by local relationship teams in all of Santander’s international locations.

The role introduction

This role is within the Banking & Corporate Finance Coverage team within Santander Corporate & Investment Banking (SCIB) in the UK. The team is high performing and established, with key responsibilities including managing clients and internal stakeholders to deliver against budgets. The role offers the opportunity to cover clients across various sectors and jurisdictions, supporting continuous learning and development.

The role supports clients in the Energy, Infrastructure & Industrials sector, managing global business across the UK, Europe, US, Latin America, and Asia. As an Associate, you will assist in developing client relationships through preparing business plans, credit committee papers, arranging meetings, preparing client materials, and analyzing business opportunities. You will also support internal tasks as needed.

Key activities

  1. Support bankers in covering clients, understanding all Santander Corporate and Investment Banking products, especially Transactional Banking (Cash & Liquidity Management, Trade & Working Capital Solutions, FX).
  2. Assist in executing client assignments, ensuring high-quality deliverables with attention to detail. Proactive engagement and product knowledge are essential.
  3. Contribute to generating business ideas to drive revenue and growth, working closely with product partners to deliver solutions and develop new initiatives.
  4. Support in delivering portfolio growth, working with Product Groups and Countries, and updating pipelines.
  5. Produce client-facing documents and pitch books, participate in deals with senior stakeholders, and develop understanding of client needs.
  6. Assist in preparing business plans and credit proposals, monitor credit risk and capital consumption, and report operational and conduct risks.
  7. Guide Client Management Services (CMS) teams to ensure timely completion of KYC forms for onboarding and refresh.

What we’re looking for

  • A Degree (or equivalent), preferably in economics or finance, or relevant experience or skills.
  • Strong analytical, numerical, and modeling skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, ability to articulate concepts clearly.
  • Professional and mature interaction with people.
  • High attention to detail, diligence, and quality assurance.
  • Self-motivated, independent, and proactive.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint skills, quick learner of new software.
  • Creativity, problem-solving, flexibility, and ability to analyze complex financial objectives.
  • Experience with main product areas of SCIB (Corporate Finance, GTB, F&A, RSG, DCM) is preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to present confidently in internal meetings and committees.
  • Fluency in English; Spanish, Portuguese, or other languages are a plus.
  • Ability to develop logical, well-reasoned arguments to influence others.
