Job summary

The Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a School Staff Nurse to provide nursing services to children in schools. The Kensington, Chelsea and Westminster School health Service are developing their school nursing workforce and are offering School Staff Nurse Band 5 positions that can be a gateway for the Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (school nursing) (SCPHN).

Main duties of the job

We are looking for enthusiastic nurses from a variety of backgrounds and experience to join our team.

School Staff Nurses manage a school nursing case load for a group of schools, with the support and supervision of Band 6 SCPHN School Nurses within a large skill mixed team. The team provides a universal and targeted school nursing service to mainstream primary and secondary schools, pupil referral units and special schools across the Bi-Borough.

  • Ensuring safe pathways of care for children in school with more complex medical conditions
  • Seeking to make the support that families receive as beneficial and positive an experience for them as possible
  • Committed to provide best outcomes for children through delivery of the Healthy Child Programme
  • Communicate effectively with our partners to work towards the best outcomes for children and their families.

The post holder will work in partnership with professionals from multiple agencies to meet the health needs of a specific population of children and young people within a group of schools, together with their families and the wider community where this is relevant. The Post holder will have sufficient post registration nursing experience in a children's/Paediatric or adult setting and can demonstrate experience in effective multi agency working.

Community Staff Nurses in the school nursing service contribute to the provision of safe andreliable services by:

  • Using their clinical judgement and risk assessments to keep the people using our services as safe as possible
  • Safeguarding people by recognising and responding when an adult or child might be at risk from abuse but also recognising their own limits and asking for help and escalate concerns when necessary
  • Escalating safety concerns and by doing so acting as effective advocates for those who use our services
  • Being open and transparent about their own practice
  • Supervising the work of others
  • Reflecting on everyday practice to identify areas where improvements in safety or quality can be made

The NMC plays an important role in safeguarding the public by regulating the work of nurses and all nurses, including Community Staff Nurses in the school nursing services are expected to register with the NMC each year and adhere to the NMC Code of Conduct.

  • Previous experience of working as part of a team
  • Understanding of clinical governance with some previous experience of undertaking audits

  • Previous sexual health training/experience
