About our School

St Paul’s Cathedral School is a co-educational independent preparatory school (Reception to Y8). The majority of our pupils (up to 285) are Day Pupils. We also educate the Choristers of St Paul’s Cathedral, who are boarders accommodated in a purpose-designed boarding house. The Choristers follow an extended termly programme, enabling them to participate in Cathedral worship at Christmas and Easter. Music is central to our ethos and holistic education.

Until September 2023, all Cathedral Choristers were boys; we now educate girl Choristers as Day Pupils, with boarding starting from September 2025 following refurbishment.

Job Description: School Nurse (Residential and/or Day)

Purpose:

We seek a school nurse to join our pastoral and boarding team. This is a permanent role with flexible options for full-year or term-time only employment, and the possibility of residential accommodation with evening and on-call duties. We are open to job sharing or rota arrangements.

This role offers an opportunity for a caring practitioner to provide medical and pastoral support during day and/or boarding hours. Accommodation is available on-site for residential candidates.

• Undertake first aid duties, treat sick pupils, liaise with parents and staff, and arrange transport as needed.
• Administer emergency first aid for injuries or illnesses.
• Maintain current knowledge of first aid and legal guidelines.
• Administer medicines safely in accordance with school policies.
• Support health screening and vaccination programmes.
• Collaborate with staff and SLT on child protection and health education.
• Support safeguarding arrangements.
• Maintain confidentiality, sharing information only with authorized personnel.
• Assess and support pupils’ mental health and wellbeing needs.
• Promote mental health, prevention, and early intervention.
• Assist in delivering the RSHE curriculum.
• Develop health plans for pupils with medical needs.
• Maintain policies, protocols, and risk assessments related to health.
• Conduct health screenings and refer to health services as needed.
• Ensure first aid kits are stocked and accessible.
• Liaise with staff, pupils, parents, and GPs as necessary.
• Provide first aid at school events such as sports days and trips.
• Possess or be willing to train in first aid training delivery.
• Attend staff meetings, including Health & Safety.
• Support staff in caring for pupils during duty hours.

Day to Day Organisation

• Record all accidents per school policy.
• Organize vaccination programmes.
• Maintain accurate medical records for pupils with medical requirements or treatments.
• Keep manual and digital records up to date.
• Prepare reports and data as required.
• Update health information displays.
• Manage first aid supplies and stock levels.
• Maintain medical histories and vaccination records.
• Keep an updated register of first aiders and kit locations.

Safeguarding

• Work with the DSL on safeguarding concerns.
• Monitor and support pupils at risk of harm.
• Stay informed on safeguarding legislation and guidance.
• Recognize signs of safeguarding issues.

Qualifications and Training

· Degree in nursing.

· Registered nurse (RN) license.

· CPR, BLS, and first aid certifications.

· Specialist community public health nursing – school nursing (SCPHN-SN).

· Mental health first aid certification.

Skills and Experience

· Minimum of one year nursing experience.

· Strong organizational and communication skills.

· Clinical skills in medication administration and minor injury treatment.

· Good numeracy skills for medication dosages.

· Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

· Quick decision-making skills.

· Ability to handle challenging situations calmly.

· Experience with children, ideally in educational or paediatric nursing settings.

Knowledge

· Basic computer skills.

· Understanding of health, wellbeing, and mental health issues.

Hours, Terms, and Conditions:

Working Hours:

08:00-16:30 for day role; 15:30-21:30 for boarding rota; overnight call if accommodation is used. Attendance at termly INSET and Cathedral services is required.
