Job description

School Librarian – Maternity Cover

Salary: £14,373.30 – £14,831.51 per annum
Hours: 25 hours per week (11am – 4pm)
Contract: Fixed-term maternity cover (up to 12 months)
Start Date: As soon as possible
Working Pattern: Term time only (38 weeks) plus 1 additional week (39 weeks total)

About the Role

We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated School Librarian to join our highly-rated secondary school on a maternity cover basis. This is an excellent opportunity to make a real difference in students’ educational journey while working in a supportive and dynamic environment.

As our School Librarian, you will be at the heart of our learning community, inspiring students to develop a love of reading and supporting their academic success across all subjects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and develop the school library collection to meet curriculum and recreational reading needs
  • Support students in developing information literacy and research skills
  • Promote reading for pleasure through engaging displays, events, and reading programmes
  • Assist students and staff with finding appropriate resources for learning and teaching
  • Maintain library systems, including cataloguing, loans, and digital resources
  • Collaborate with teaching staff to support curriculum delivery
  • Organise author visits, book clubs, and literacy events
  • Provide a welcoming and inclusive environment for all library users
  • Support students with homework and independent study

Essential Requirements

  • Experience working with young people aged 11-16
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Passion for books, reading, and learning
  • IT skills and familiarity with library management systems
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Desirable Qualities

  • Previous experience in a school library environment
  • Knowledge of young adult literature and curriculum requirements
  • Experience organising events and activities
  • Understanding of different learning needs and abilities
