Job description

Could you make a positive, valued contribution to a local school?

School Governor

Required September 2025

Voluntary - commitment to the role is for 4 years

Being a Governor is a rewarding way of making a voluntary contribution to the lives of local young people. Newdale Primary School and Nursery is looking for new Community Governor: experience in Education, Health and Safety or Premises Development would be an advantage.

The Governors of Newdale Primary School and Nursery are a diverse group of local people who share a commitment to the education and welfare of the children in our care and the continued development of the school for the benefit of future generations. Every aspect of the life and conduct of our school is overseen by the Governing Body.

The Governing Body at Newdale Primary School and Nursery has three main functions:

• Setting strategic direction - championing our vision, values and ethos and setting priorities for school improvement

• Holding to account – we are responsible for holding the Headteacher and Senior Leaders to account for the quality of teaching and learning, for levels of achievement and for behaviours and safety.

• Ensuring good financial governance – ensuring good financial management by setting and overseeing the budget, ensuring that resources are allocated to school priorities and needs.

Our Governing Body comprises Staff governors, Parent governors, Local Authority and Community governors. Much of their work is carried out through meetings and committees. Our Governors do spend time in school, meeting and working with the staff and students and also contribute to the success of school visits and residential trips throughout the school year.

We would be delighted to hear from anyone who has:

• an interest in the performance of the schools

• an open and enquiring mind and the ability to look at issues objectively

• the confidence to ask questions and join in debate

• a willingness to listen and make informed judgements

• the ability to work well with others

• Some time to spare to attend committee and full governing body meetings and work with subject leaders

Being a Governor does take time, energy and commitment. However, it is very enriching to be part of this lively and successful team and to play an instrumental role in fostering good relationships between the school, parents and the wider community.

Newdale Primary School and Nursery is committed to the safeguarding and protection of children and young people. All posts working with children, young people and vulnerable adults will be subject to online checks and an enhanced DBS check. Newdale’s child protection and safeguarding policy is accessible via the school website. We are committed to equality and diversity.
