Job description

School Counsellor (E7301) - Mount St Mary's Catholic High School

Mount St Mary’s is a successful and oversubscribed inner city school located in the very heart of the city. Drawing from three of the four compass points the school flourishes in an atmosphere of engagement and aspiration drawing hugely upon the experiences of our incredibly diverse community.

In April 2019 the school underwent a Section 48 Inspection gaining an overall judgement of Good with Outstanding. The report comments "Students are polite, confident and respectful in the way they treat each other and interact with staff and visitors. They are .. highly articulate and proud of their school and their personal achievements. Behaviour in school is excellent and a strength of the school as it reflects its Catholic character."

Our most recent Section 5 Ofsted Inspection found us to be a highly inclusive school where students recognise the positive impact it has on their lives. A school where the curriculum is expertly delivered and students can describe their learning with clarity. Students behave impeccably, consequently lessons are calm and purposeful and rates of attendance are consistently high. Students are exceptionally well prepared for life beyond school and flourish in a climate where exemplary leadership has an unwavering focus on ensuring all students succeed.

With the return to national progress comparatives in 2022, Mount St Mary’s topped both local and regional tables for P8. This success was replicated in 2023, and again in 2024, where we continue to buck the national trends.

All students seek to access extracurricular activities beyond the school day, be that of a sporting nature, academic, performing arts or public speaking. This is an area we value highly and continue to see growth in.

Required for September 2025.Governors would like to appoint an experienced School Counsellor to work alongside our strong pastoral team. We are looking for someone who is self-motivated and will use their experience to provide a high-quality counselling service to students who are experiencing a wide range of emotional problems. Promoting the importance of early intervention and access to timely psychological therapies for students and families.

The successful candidate will be able to give support, guidance and advice to parents, carers and the school and deliver a bespoke counselling service to the students at Mount St Mary’s. The School Counsellor role will contribute to the safeguarding, promotion of welfare and personal care of students whilst observing confidentiality at all times.

The post holder will develop and use a range of solution focussed interventions to support students, liaising with other agencies, parents/carers and school staff where appropriate. The successful candidate must hold a recognised qualification in counselling or psychotherapy and have excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to convey empathy and relate well to all members of the school and wider community

This post is fixed term for 2 terms maternity cover.

Our School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of our pupils and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.
