Job summary

The King's School in Macclesfield is seeking an Evening Caretaker to join our Estates team. You will provide a visible caretaking presence during late afternoons and evenings across our 80-acre campus, helping with events, safety checks and secure site closing.

We are looking for reliable individuals with practical maintenance and security experience, who can work independently, follow safeguarding guidelines, and support after-school activities. Weekend overtime may be required.

Qualifications

• Experience in caretaking, facilities, maintenance or security.
• Basic maintenance or DIY skills and ability to follow security/closing procedures.
• Good communication with staff, visitors, contractors, and colleagues.
• Willingness to work evenings and occasional weekends.

Responsibilities

• Secure the school site at the end of the day, locking buildings and gates, setting alarms and closing checks.
• Support after-school activities, lettings, meetings, performances, sports and events.
• Monitor site access, arrange visitor/contractor access, and follow safeguarding procedures.
• Assist with event setup/close-down and room readiness for the next day.
• Respond to minor repairs, faults, spills, waste, and urgent site requests.

Job Title: School Caretaker

Location: Macclesfield

Salary: Around £27,000 per annum plus overtime, dependent upon qualifications and experience (to be discussed at interview)

Job Type: Full-Time, Monday-Friday, 10.00am-7.00pm, with overtime for two out of three Saturday mornings

The King's School in Macclesfield is seeking to appoint a reliable and practical Evening Caretaker to join our Estates team. This is an important role in ensuring our school remains safe, secure and well maintained throughout the evening. Working across our impressive 80-acre campus, you will support after-school activities, lettings and events, undertake routine security checks and ensure the site is properly secured at the end of each day.

The Role:

Reporting to the Senior Caretaker, with overall line management from the Estates Manager, you will provide a visible and responsive caretaking presence during the late afternoon and evening. You will help maintain a safe, welcoming and well-organised environment for pupils, staff, visitors and external site users.

• Working Hours: 10.00am-7.00pm, Monday to Friday, with overtime for two out of three Saturday mornings. Flexibility is also required.
• Start Date: As soon as possible.

Key Responsibilities:

• Secure the school site at the end of the day, including locking buildings and gates, setting alarms and completing closing checks.
• Support the safe running of after-school activities, lettings, meetings, performances, sporting activities and events.
• Monitor site access, support visitor and contractor arrangements, and follow safeguarding and security procedures.
• Assist with event preparation and close-down, including moving furniture, setting up rooms and ensuring spaces are ready for the next school day.
• Respond to minor repairs, faults, spillages, waste issues and other urgent site requests within your capabilities.
• Carry out routine health and safety checks, report hazards and follow risk assessments and safe working practices.
• Support evening waste and recycling routines and maintain a safe, tidy and professional site.
• Record incidents, defects and outstanding tasks, providing clear handover information to colleagues.
• Support emergency responses and undertake other reasonable duties as directed by the Senior Caretaker or Estates Manager.

About You:

We are looking for a dependable and responsible individual who:

• Has experience in caretaking, facilities, maintenance, security, site support or similar practical work.
• Has basic maintenance or DIY skills and can confidently follow site security and closing procedures.
• Communicates effectively with staff, visitors, contractors and colleagues.
• Can work independently, remain calm under pressure and manage competing priorities.
• Understands the importance of safeguarding, health and safety and confidentiality.
• Can carry out manual handling tasks safely and is willing to undertake relevant training.
• Is flexible and willing to support events, lettings and occasional weekend work.

Experience in a school, college, leisure or estates environment would be advantageous. Fire Marshal, first aid, manual handling or COSHH training, knowledge of alarm systems and a full driving licence would also be desirable.
