Job Description:

JOB PURPOSE

To drive any vehicle allocated in a careful, lawful manner with special reference to the persons and equipment being carried.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Transport children, including those with mobility problems or severe/moderate learning difficulties to and from school or other authorised locations.
  • Assist children, including those with mobility problems, in and out of the vehicle.
  • Ensure good behaviour of children on the bus where practicable and report any incidents to the Transport Officer or designated person.
  • Operate lifts and ramps on vehicles as required; ensure wheelchairs are properly clamped and secured.
  • Provide minor first aid to passengers and ensure injured children receive medical attention promptly. Complete and submit accident reports to the Transport Officer.
  • Direct School Bus escorts, if employed, in assisting with duties.
  • Transport meals from and return empty containers to School Meals Kitchens; assist at schools as required.
  • Observe scheduled timings as far as possible; keep detailed records of journeys, fuel, oil, servicing, and repairs.
  • Carry out daily vehicle checks: fuel, condition, oil, water levels, tyre pressures; top up as needed.
  • Complete defect reports and submit to engineers.
  • Comply with EU drivers’ hours, Tachograph regulations, and Working Time Directive.
  • Ensure the safe custody of spare parts, tools, and goods carried in the vehicle.
  • Wash the vehicle as needed; keep interior clean and tidy.
  • Follow the Education Authority’s Drivers’ Manual.
General Conditions
  • Carry out duties in compliance with Health and Safety at Work (NI) order 1978, relevant laws, regulations, and codes of practice.
  • Perform duties within the usual working conditions of the role.
  • Complete all necessary paperwork.
  • Perform duties within the same grade and competence.
