Job description

The Shenandoah Conservatory is seeking a highly qualified candidate for the newly created position of Scenic Charge Artist and adjunct faculty member in the Theatre Design and Production program. This is a full-time, 12-month staff position with benefits, requiring evening and weekend work, a current driver license, and the ability to work at heights and stand for long periods.

Position Overview

Reporting to the Executive Director for Performances and Engagement and collaborating with Theatre Division faculty, the Scenic Charge Artist supports the general operation and production needs of the Conservatory. The focus is on scenic design and scenic art for the Theatre Division, Shenandoah Summer Music Theatre (SSMT), guest artist performances, and other university events.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Oversee and manage year-round paint shop operations supporting various productions and events.
  2. Collaborate with faculty, guest artists, designers, and students to provide scenic art and staffing support for multiple productions and performances.
  3. Serve as Scenic Designer or mentor students in design, including two Theatre Division productions annually and the Holiday Gala.
  4. Act as Scenic Charge Artist or mentor student Paint Charge for all Theatre Division and SSMT performances and other events.
  5. Manage paint shop operations, logistics, and safety, including hiring, training, and supervising staff and students.
  6. Establish and maintain paint shop hours in collaboration with faculty, supervise staff, and ensure safe practices.
  7. Maintain tools, equipment, and shop organization, and track the shop budget.
  8. Provide technical support for special events as needed.
  9. Teach one course per semester (Introduction to Drawing, Introduction to Design, or Scenic Art) as adjunct faculty.
  10. Participate in recruitment, retention, production meetings, auditions, and related activities.
