Scenes of Crime Administrator
The Scientific Services Unit for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire (BCH), one of the leading Scientific Services Units in the country, has an exciting opportunity for you to join the unit as a Scene of Crime Administrator based at Milton Police Station, Cambridgeshire, in a full-time position.
The successful candidate will work alongside a team of Volume Crime Scene Examiners and Scenes of Crime Officers, providing vital administrative support to the SOC Hub.
The hours of work will be Monday - Thursday 0800 - 1600hrs and Friday 0800 - 1530hrs. Flexible working can be considered if successful.
The position is based at Milton Police Station, Milton, Cambridgeshire and is a fixed site role. As a new police station this offers the opportunity to work from a modern, purpose built location. Whilst you will be part of a tri-force team you will be required to work from this location; agile working is not suitable due to nature of the role. However, there may occasionally be a requirement to provide support to other SOC Hubs across BCH. As a result, you may be required to travel within the tri-force area from time to time.
The primary function of the Scenes of Crime department within BCH SSU is to attend crime scenes of varying complexity, from volume crime through to major investigations, where forensic examinations are undertaken and evidence recovered to support criminal investigations and court proceedings. As a Scenes of Crime Administrator, you will play a key role in maintaining the integrity of evidence entering the Criminal Justice System. Working closely with Crime Scene Examiners, you will oversee the receipt, recording, storage and movement of exhibits, ensuring compliance with exhibit handling procedures and maintaining accurate records throughout the evidential chain.
Considered a unit at the forefront of accreditation, BCH SSU SOC operates to ISO 17020 standards, quality fundamental to the delivery of reliable forensic services. Your attention to detail and commitment to maintaining accurate records will help ensure that evidence is managed effectively, preserved to the highest standards, and remains suitable for presentation within the criminal justice process.
We are also excited to also offer this role as a development opportunity to the right candidate. Subject to operational requirements and the completion of core administrative duties, there may be opportunities to attend crime scenes to observe Crime Scene Investigators undertaking examinations. BCH SSU utilises a vacancy-based career progression scheme to fill positions within the department at a higher level. This administrative role therefore offers a development pathway for individuals aspiring to become a Crime Scene Investigator. In addition to providing vital administrative support within a forensic environment, the post offers a unique opportunity to gain valuable knowledge, exposure, skills, and experience of forensic operations and crime scene examination. Successful candidates will develop an understanding of the CSI profession, helping to build a strong foundation for future career progression opportunities within our Scientific Services Unit.
We are seeking a highly motivated, resilient individual with a focus on providing a high-quality public service. Previous qualifications or experience within a forensic field is not required. Full training will be provided through mentoring, 1:1 sessions, online learning and provision of Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) documentation.
The successful candidate will be required to demonstrate an understanding and ability to follow procedures that are designed in line with the Forensic Regulator and ISO 17020.
