Qualifications

Job description

This role is an exciting opportunity to join the Satellite Service Delivery team with responsibility for providing technical leadership and systems engineering expertise throughout the Service phase of SSTL missions (Launch to End of Life). This focuses primarily on the development and continued maintenance of Satellite services, and reactive/proactive problem solving to identify and address issues across the full system - from service planning to spacecraft payload operation, and through to final data and service delivery to customers. This role covers all in-flight missions (ranging from LEO to interplanetary missions) covering a wide range of applications (from EO, to Comms and Navigation, and science / technology demonstration), and also includes system and subsystem development support activities and technical study work.

Key Tasks
  • Working with the Satellite Services Manager and Service Delivery Managers to ensure agreed levels of availability are met across the space segment and ground segment
  • Working with mission Spacecraft Operations Engineers, System Engineers and Project Managers to ensure a smooth handover into Service Delivery post LEOP and Commissioning
  • Lead technical investigation of anomalies and service outages for supported in flight missions
  • Provide detailed analysis and root cause analysis for issues that occur to SSTL’s inflight missions
  • Provide technical input to anomaly resolution, and resumption of operational service, across multiple subsystems on the ground and space segments.
  • Support development / adoption of new tools and processes to allow spacecraft and ground segment state of health to be accurately monitored, and to provide early notification of anomalous trends and changes in performance.
  • Support service improvements and capability enhancements for a variety of customers
  • Identify and implement service improvements and where appropriate, feed these back in to the design of future opportunities
  • Manage and co-ordinate routine and non-routine orbital manoeuvres with the operations team and service delivery managers
  • Understanding and improving relevant company standard and work practices
  • Provide material for presentations and reports, including technical presentations to customers when required.
  • Management of one or more project work packages
  • Mentoring of junior colleagues where necessary
  • Provide routine on Call Support as a member of the On Call Rota System

Previous Experience

  • 2+ years of experience in either Spacecraft Operations or Spacecraft Systems Engineering, with an understanding of:
    • Space and ground segments to the sub-system level
    • Spacecraft verification testing
Qualifications Knowledge & Skills
  • A degree or equivalent in engineering, Physics or Maths

Good working knowledge of orbit analysis, constellation configurations, RF link analysis, system budgets, operations, ground segment, space environment and satellite mechanical and electrical architectures

  • Good knowledge of a wide range of satellite applications, e.g. Earth observation, communications, navigation, science etc.
  • Experience as a technical lead on a space mission project
  • Excellent knowledge of STK and python or equivalent analysis tools
  • Ability to work under pressure to tight timescales
  • Ability to work autonomously and use own initiative to progress tasks
  • Excellent problem solving and attention to detail
  • Good organisation and time management skills
  • Excellent technical writing and presentation skills
  • Excellent knowledge of MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint

Flexible and must be able to support work outside of office hours on occasion, and be able to support paid on call support

Location

The role is based in our Head Office in Guildford - flexible working options may be considered.
