Job summary

Barrus Ltd is seeking a Sales Engineer (Export Sales) for their Special Products Division. This role focuses on promoting and expanding sales in international markets for the Barrus PIRS products. Responsibilities include customer relationship management, developing sales strategies, and providing technical support. The ideal candidate will have a strong engineering background with experience in export sales, excellent communication skills, and a willingness to travel. This is an office-based role with potential for regular overseas travel.

Qualifications

Sales Engineer (Export Sales) – Special Products

We are currently recruiting for a Sales Engineer (Export Sales) within our Special Products Division.

This role involves promoting and expanding company sales for the Barrus PIRS products, in international markets. Working closely with technical teams to understand product specifications and translate these into compelling sales pitches for export.

Key Accountabilities

  • Customer Interface
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with international customers and partners, ensuring customer satisfaction and loyalty.
  • Identify customer needs and provide technical support and product knowledge to address inquiries and facilitate sales.
  • Act as a customer interface for all issues and resolve in a timely manner to give the best possible customer service.
  • Export Sales
  • Identify and cultivate potential international markets for our products or services, utilising market research and analysis.
  • Develop and implement effective sales strategies and tactics to penetrate new markets and expand business opportunities within existing markets.
  • Actively lead sales efforts, including prospecting, generating leads, conducting presentations, negotiating contracts, and closing deals.
  • Monitor market trends and competitor activities to identify potential threats and opportunities for business development.
  • Monitor sales performance and ensure export targets are achieved. Prepare and present sales reports, forecasts, and performance analysis to senior management.
  • Attend international trade shows and events to network, promote the brand and represent the company at international business meetings and conferences.
  • Technical Proposals
  • Prepare and deliver technical presentations, product demonstrations, and proofs of concept tailored to customer needs.
  • Product Engineering
  • Define product requirements and specifications based on customer insights, market research, and business goals.
  • Integrate new technologies to enhance product innovation and quality.
  • Manage prototypes, performance testing, and validation phases to ensure products meet technical and regulatory standards as well as ensuring the product is built in line with specification.
  • Technical Sales Support
  • Effectively address technical questions and support the sales team in resolving objections during the sales process.
  • Support sales teams and develop solutions that align with customer objectives and technical requirements. Provide clear documentation, drawings, costings and proposals.
  • Act as a trusted advisor by providing strategic technical guidance to customers during the sales cycle and beyond, ensuring product specifications meet their needs.
  • Ensure all job cards have been costed accurately and closed in a timely manner once any works have been completed.
  • Work closely with internal teams, including engineering, marketing, and operations, to ensure seamless execution of projects and customer satisfaction.
  • Build strong relationships with key customers.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in marine technology and industry trends.
  • Infield Support
  • Provide in-field support as needed to meet customer requirements. Confirm that any chargeable work is accurately processed by the office and promptly invoiced to the customer.

Professional Experience

  • BSc / BE / BEng in engineering, related field or equivalent experience
  • Full UK Driving Licence
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in Engineering
  • Preferably experience in a sales or customer facing role
  • Proven experience in export sales, technical sales or engineering, within the manufacturing or engineering industry.
  • Proven track record in building new business through export distribution. (advantageous)
  • Familiarity with marine engines, propulsion systems, and related technologies (advantageous)
  • Understanding of the marine industry, including regulations, standards, and market trends. (advantageous)

  • Excellent communication, administrative and organisational skills, written and telephone.
  • Computer skills essential.
  • Strong interpersonal, customer focus and presentation skills.
  • Willingness and ability to travel (regular overseas required)
  • Self-motivated, proactive, and able to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a focus on achieving sales targets.
  • Flexibility in attitude to working requirement.
  • Aptitude for working under pressure in a structured, efficient manner.
  • Thorough attention to detail
  • Accurate and timely completion of tasks
  • Enthusiasm to work within a close and cooperative team

Office based role with commitment to travel (potentially twice a month) overseas.
