Job description

Following the exciting introduction of the ARRS GP role, we are delighted to offer the opportunity for a newly qualified, enthusiastic, forward-thinking GP to join our PCN.

You will be within 2 years of GP qualification (not having had a substantive post previously) or due to qualify within the next 3 months, and will have the opportunity to enjoy a fulfilling role with up to 6 sessions per week.

Main duties of the job

The GP will undertake a variety of duties governed by the GMS contract and objectives of Enhanced services, including:

  • In person consultations
  • Telephone consultations
  • Online consultations
  • Triage calls
  • Visiting patients at home and in nursing homes
  • On call duties
  • Checking and signing repeat prescriptions
  • Dealing with queries, paperwork and correspondence as required
  • Clinical administration

Job responsibilities

Clinical and administrative responsibilities:

  • Make professional, autonomous decisions in relation to presenting problems, whether self-referred or referred from other health care workers within the organisation
  • Screen patients for disease risk factors and early signs of illness
  • Cover all the clinical management of the patients in surgery as appropriate including initiating investigations, reviewing results, making referrals to secondary care or to other providers as appropriate
  • Develop care and treatment plans in consultation with patients and in line with current Practice disease management protocols as well wider guidance such as that from NICE
  • Assessing the health care needs of patients with undifferentiated and undiagnosed problems.
  • Check, read and interpret pathological results for patients
  • Ensure appropriate follow up of patients
  • Record clear and contemporaneous computerised consultation notes to agreed standards
  • Participate in clinical audits, and learning event analyses and practice meetings
  • Ensure that practice clinical database is updated promptly and accurately with information relating to patient records, as required for clinical accuracy and for practice recording requirements under QOF and enhanced services.
  • Appropriate use of read codes.
  • Compile and issue computer-generated acute and repeat prescriptions avoiding hand-written prescriptions.
  • Prescribe appropriately and in accordance with the Practice prescribing formulary, NICE guidance and Good Prescribing Practice (as defined by British National Formulary guidance)
  • Work with and provide support for other members of the primary health care team
  • Play a lead role in the practice achieving agreed and other key performance indicator targets
  • Participate in team meetings and patient engagement events

Personal/Professional Development:

The post-holder will participate in any training programme implemented by the Practice as part of this employment, such training to include:

  • Participation in an annual individual performance review, including taking responsibility for maintaining a record of own personal and/or professional development.
  • Taking responsibility for own development, learning and performance and demonstrating skills and activities to others who are undertaking similar work.
  • Maintain current and annual certification, e.g. CPR, Fire Safety, Information Governance.
  • Ensure training and development is up-to-date using various training methods, on-line, group, conference.
  • Ensure study leave allocation is utilised and planned accordingly.
  • Provide health education to colleagues, e.g. audits, participation in educational meetings.

PCN & Practice Organisation:

  • Process and action incoming patient and hospital correspondence.
  • Attendance at in-house meetings, significant event audit meetings and others as deemed necessary.
  • Ensure that the PCN/practice complaints system is adhered to at all times.
  • Awareness and compliance with all relevant guidelines e.g. data protection, confidentiality and health and safety.
