Position Description

Position Summary: This is a 1st Shift Position. The employee works four ten hour shifts per week, with the standard hours of 6am – 4pm. The employee is scheduled to work every-other weekend (Fri-Mon). Position responsibilities include security patrols of campus (by vehicle and on foot), responding to medical and emergency calls for service, opening of administrative and academic buildings, providing safe-ride services, enforcing of all University student and employee conduct policies, conducting criminal investigations, community engagement with faculty, staff and students, and engaging with all community members in a Christ-like manner.

Education Required

High school diploma or equivalent

Education Preferred

Associate or Bachelor’s degree

Experience Required

One year of employment in the safety and security services field or emergency services industry. Prior experience working in a higher education setting.

Experience Preferred

  • 2 years of law enforcement/security experience
  • 2 years of emergency services experience
  • First Aid/CPR/AED and Stop the Bleed Certifications
  • 1 year in a customer-service related field
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Word & Excel

Special Working Conditions

Must have the ability to mentally and physically perform essential job functions which require walking, prolonged standing, pushing, pulling, stooping, lifting (40lbs), dragging 150lbs 10 feet or more and endure various weather conditions. Willingness to work different shifts, work weekends and holidays, some mandatory overtime required for special events; submit to Hepatitis B immunization or provide documentation of such. This position is essential; employees providing essential services must report to work as scheduled by their supervisor in the event of an emergency closing or delay, regardless of weather conditions.

Driving Requirements

This position requires the operation of a Messiah University owned or leased vehicle and the employee must possess and maintain a current driver’s license, meet the established criteria, and abide by all policies and procedures as presented in the University’s Fleet Vehicle Use Policy.

Duties

Essential Employee Essential - Emergency Only Primary Duties

  • Patrol campus via vehicle, bike, or on foot
  • Provide physical security services for University facilities
  • Act as a resource to students, employees, and campus visitors
  • Responsible for maintaining up-to-date knowledge of all parking and permit regulations outlined in the University traffic code, and enforce as necessary
  • Conduct active traffic management to ensure compliance with PA vehicle code
  • Respond to, investigate, and accurately document crimes reported to the department that occur in or on campus property
  • Direct traffic during large campus events
  • Respond to and assume operational control of incidents (campus emergencies) to ensure safety of individuals and property. Be first responder for medical calls
  • Conduct safety escorts for campus community members
  • Act as liaison with outside law enforcement and other community organizations
  • Conduct safety & security awareness trainings to University students and employees
  • Maintain consistent and reliable attendance

Secondary Duties

  • Testify at PA Court of Common Pleas, District Justice and campus judiciary/administrative hearings
  • Perform dispatch services as needed due to campus needs
  • Conduct and assist in the execution of fire drills
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor
