Job summary

Balfour Beatty plc is seeking a dedicated Highways Safety Inspector to maintain top safety standards across the M25 network and other assets. The role is site-based with daily driving across routes and occasional weekend work, flexible Swanley-based arrangements, and travel to projects as required.

You will perform daily inspections, identify defects, escalate safety issues, and contribute to robust safety practices with National Highways and CPS teams.

Qualifications

• Full driving licence required and clean driving record.
• Experience working on highway maintenance contracts.
• Knowledge of highway and motorway defects and repair standards.
• Understanding of highway construction and repair requirements.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.

About The Role

We are seeking a dedicated Highways Safety Inspector to join our dynamic team and play a vital role in maintaining the highest standards of safety across our road networks.

This is a site-based role, undertaking Highway Safety Inspections across the M25 DBFO Network. The Highway Safety Inspector will carry out daily driven and monthly walked inspections to identify safety defects across multiple asset types that may pose a risk to road users and customers. You will be responsible for identifying and escalating defect information to the relevant network teams, enabling timely hazard mitigation and defect repairs.

Flexible working based out of Swanley with travel to projects or other offices as required. The role will predominantly be site-based, driving the M25 network on a daily basis.

What you'll be doing

• Safety Compliance: Conduct thorough inspections of highways, roads, and related infrastructure to ensure compliance with safety regulations, standards, and policies.
• Risk Assessment: Identify and assess potential highway safety hazards, monitor asset condition, and elevate Category 1 defects to Network Traffic Control Operators (NTCO), ensuring safety-critical risks are promptly identified, communicated and acted upon to prevent accidents and enhance overall safety.
• Quality Assurance: Evaluate maintenance activities to ensure they meet established safety standards and specifications, providing timely feedback to project teams.
• Data Analysis: Collect and analyse road safety data to support the development of comprehensive safety strategies.
• Collaboration: Work closely with stakeholders including National Highways, CPS depot teams, and local communities to promote a culture of safety and implement best practices.
• Coordination: Manage daily inspection programmes and maintain accurate inspection records in the Confirm asset management system.

Who we're looking for

Qualifications/ Skills

• Full driving licence (B/B1)
• Previous experience in a highway maintenance contract
• Knowledge and experience of highway and motorway defects
• Understanding of highway construction and repair requirements
• Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
• CSCS Site Visitor Card
• Preferred: Lantra Highway Safety Inspection Qualification (or equivalent)

Working Arrangements (shift Work, Need For Travel Etc)

• Typically day shifts with requirement to travel on various M25 routes throughout the week to record asset conditions.
• There will be on ocacssion requirements to work weekends or public holidays.
• Full Driving License.
