Job summary

SSEN Transmission is hiring a Safety, Health & Wellbeing (SHW) Advisor based in Scotland. The role provides proactive SHW and CDM guidance across transmission projects, with emphasis on development, design, planning, pre-construction and advanced works.

You’ll support timely handover into delivery and ensure compliance with SHW procedures throughout the project lifecycle. The role requires strong CDM knowledge, a background in construction safety and stakeholder engagement.

Qualifications

• Experience applying SHW and CDM requirements across construction or infrastructure projects.
• Qualified in occupational safety, construction safety, CDM, design risk management or related SHW discipline (NEBOSH Diploma/IOSH beneficial).
• Good working knowledge of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations and provide practical advice to Client/Principal Designer/Designer.
• Experience supporting design risk management, Designer Risk Assessments, Pre-Construction Information, construction-phase planning or safe systems of work.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills with ability to build relationships across project teams and external stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Provide proactive SHW and CDM advice, engagement and guidance to Transmission project teams and directorates, focusing on development, design, planning and pre-construction.
• Identify, assess and manage SHW risks throughout the project lifecycle; ensure design risk management processes are implemented and maintained.
• Assist those appointed as Client, Principal Designer and Designer to comply with CDM Regulations and Safe Systems of Work procedures.
• Work with project teams to ensure strategies for interfaces, temporary works, surveys, and site clearance are in place during development and construction.
• Complete assurance activities on and off site; monitor SHW performance and help identify trends and improvement opportunities.

Base Location:

For this role, we require successful applicants to be based from one of our Scottish locations and you'll be expected to spend 50% of your working week in the office – Inverness, Aberdeen or Perth.

Salary:

£51,600 - £60,000 + car / car allowance + performance-related bonus + a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing and family.

The role

SSEN Transmission has an opportunity for a Safety, Health & Wellbeing (SHW) Advisor to join the SHW Team. This role will provide proactive, pragmatic SHW and CDM advice across Transmission projects, with a particular focus on development, design, planning, pre-construction and advanced works, while supporting the transition into delivery and construction-phase activity. Working closely with project teams, designers, duty holders, contract partners and other stakeholders, you’ll help ensure SHW risks are identified, understood and managed throughout the project lifecycle. This will include supporting safety in design, design risk management, early works such as site surveys, ground investigations, public road improvements and site clearance, alongside the development of suitable arrangements for construction-phase delivery.

The role would suit someone with a strong background in CDM, construction safety, design risk management or occupational SHW who can apply practical judgement across complex infrastructure projects. You’ll help teams comply with UK health and safety legislation, CDM requirements, internal SHW procedures and safe systems of work, while supporting our ambition to create a healthy, happy and safe workplace.

You will

• Support project teams, designers and duty holders to identify, assess and manage SHW risks throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring design risk management processes are implemented, recorded, reviewed and maintained.
• Assist those appointed to carry out the duties of Client, Principal Designer and Designer to comply with CDM Regulations, Safe Systems of Work procedures and relevant Transmission SHW Management System requirements.
• Work with project teams during development, pre-construction and advanced works to ensure suitable strategies are in place to manage interfaces, temporary works, surveys, ground investigations, site clearance, public road improvements and the coordination of ongoing design work during construction.
• Complete assurance activities on and off site, monitor SHW performance, support effective incident reporting and management, and help identify trends, learning and improvement opportunities.

You have

• Experience of applying SHW and CDM requirements across construction or infrastructure projects, preferably with strong exposure to development, design, planning, pre-construction or early works activity.
• A qualification in occupational safety, construction safety, CDM, design risk management or a related SHW discipline. A NEBOSH Diploma, equivalent qualification or membership of IOSH or a similar professional body would be beneficial.
• Good working knowledge of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations and the ability to provide practical advice to Client, Principal Designer, Designer and project team duty holders.
• Experience supporting design risk management, Designer Risk Assessments, Pre-Construction Information, construction-phase planning or safe systems of work within a project environment.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build effective relationships across project teams, designers, contractors, senior leaders and other internal and external stakeholders.
